  • velocity layers, placement on soundstage and microphone placement

Hi, I am reading up on MIDI orchestration and several questions have come to mind. 1) (I use Vienna Instruments pro) I know that if velocity crossfade is turned on it overrules CC11. If I understand it correctly the velocity crossfade scales velocity layers along with the expression. Is there a way to handle these parameters seperately? i.e. to produce a note with the timbre of FF and the dynamics of PP ? 2) How are the placements on the soundstage and the microphone placements determined if you do not use Vienna MIR Pro? Thanks in advance, Pieter

I'm no expert, but I think Velocity XF does not overrule CC11, and with Velocity XF on, CC11 will continue to affect loudness without affecting timbre. Velocity XF only overrules the velocity value that comes with the note-on message, I think.

  • The samples in the presets may already be panned, depending on the instrument e.g. Dimension Strings where each player in a section has a different stereo placement. You can change this in VI Pro any way you like. As BachRules pointed out you overide MIDI velocity, but not expression, so no CC messages are bypassed. It's quite easy to get the effect you want. It can be a very interesting, although with the use of spot mics on orchestras and overdubs it's not unusual to hear a quiet instrument standing out over a full orchestra in film music.

  • Thank you for the information. I am using VSL Special edition plus, and in it's manual I can't find information as to how the samples have been recorded or panned. Can someone enlighten me please?
