  • Dimension basses and articulations

I am trying to get a legato followed by a portamento directly into a staccato. Using keynotes, I can get the portamento and no staccato or no portamento with the staccato depending where I put the keyswitches. (I can't get both!) As I don't entirely understand the Dimension strings, there must be another way to do this besides shortening the "staccatos" in the Logic piano roll window which never quite have the "ping" of the real staccato articulation.

I'd appreciate any help in advance.

  • I hope I understand you correctly.

When you use perfofmance portamento patches to slide from one note to another, the portamento is part the second note, so the only way to approximate a staccato is to shorten this note. One of the things that distinguishes the staccato is the bow change between notes, but the bow is being used during the transition when playing portamento. You could try having some players play a real staccato to see if you like the result.

  • Thanks John,

You are right! I was able to get what I wanted by putting the slide on the first note as it was meant to be part of it and not the second note with which I lined up with the staccato keyswitch. (Being a former high school orchestra viola player I did know what I wanted even with my technical limitations!)

    Thanks again,
