  • Kontakt 5 in VEPro5 as localhost instaces

I wanted to make a good string sound, which combines 3-4 different libraries with their pros and cons. So I started to make a String patch, which contains 16 VSL VIPs and approx. 30 Kontakt instruments (Like Cinematic Strings, Albion etc.) The problem is, that now the CPU usage by only playing staccato phrases in all 5 string section together it is on its absolutely max. Maybe it is just the case itself, that I just want to make one click in my main DAW Logic X and it loads a VEPro Instance with Strings, where for example Violins I Leg triggers automatically VIP with Dimension Violins Leg and one Kontakt instance with a Cinematic Strings and Albion Strings instrument in it. It just seems, it is to much, I have tried to make alle combinations with the numbers of threads which where used in VEPro and multiprocessing in Kontakt5 (on, off etc.) All is on the latest version, I use Logic X, CPU is an intel 6-core i7 3.4 Ghz. I am open up for suggestions or better solutions, because a bring this really strong hardware machine to its max only by playing 5 tracks of staccato strings! Thanks!

  • Are your libs on SSD ? if not do so ;)

  • 2 TB RAID 0 System (loading time 2,1 gb/sec) good enough? :P

    2 giga bit ?

try free Blackmagic Disk Speed Test, so we have the same figure. A SSD on my Macbook is 437 MB/s, over 700 on my Raid of SSD

  • Lol.. it's a RAID 0 System with 9x250 SSDs (so it's x4/x5 from a normal SSD), so in safe mode it's bit under 2 gb/sec, max. is bit over 2,1 gb/sec it could possible load into the RAM... But I guess it's a bit off topic? I have a lot of problems with the CPU spikes and overloads in VE Pro by using Kontakt 5....

  • You need seperate machines. Stick with the Mac for composing ans use cheap PC-Slaves for playback. I have an old Mac for composing and the effects work and PC slaves for sample or synth playback with VePro. While sampele streaming is no issue with SSDs anymore - scripting in Kontakt is a CPU issue. Some libraries like Spitfire and Cinesamples need very much of your CPU for the scripting. This may explain yous cpu spikes because at a certain position of you musical piece less or more scripting is needed. Depending on your used mic position you'll probably playback thousands of voices and release samples. This also needs CPU power - at least with Kontakt. A large number of Kontak instances do also need not too little CPU time for just "hanging around" in idle mode doing nothing at all.

It is not off topic !

    Very good 😉

How are plugged your SSD ?

Can you give the values of the Memory table in Activity Monitor ?

Did you try to take Kontakt out of VE PRO?

  • mmueller - yes I know, that was my previous system, iMac + Slave, but it was a bit annoying with a separate PC. So I decided to invest in a really good machine. I know, that it isn't the best to use VePro as localhost, was just easy to save patches with it. But you are absolutely right, thousands of voices at the same time, I wanted to see, what the machine can take, seems it isn't so much more than on an external normal 4core PC, bit frustrating :P. Cyril - I don't know exactly. A friend configured it. I think they are plugged in on so called "HighPoint RocketRAID 362x Series 6 Gb/s SATA RAID HBA Solution" - thing.

  • I use VePro also standalone on the same machine when using it with Propellerhead Reason. But with huge Kontakt templates things get difficult very fast. Regarding PC slaves you don't need to invest big money. An high clocked i5 is sufficient. I use a cheap regular harddrive (who cares how long the slave needs to start up) for the system and a single SSD for the samples. It's more important to have a separate network card for use with VePro.

    This is good.

    You did not reply :
