  • Hi Michael,

Very nice music and a good version with Notion Performance. I can hear that you've used the Notion presets (the sustain patch crossfaded with the portato). Usually, the portato is a bit too powerfull and causes some kind of in-between-click between notes. Lowering the VelX (lower than 40) can help here. The orchestra is really in the background and misses some dynamic or motion. The harpsichord is a bit burried under the strings. A very good example is the version of Il Gardelino with Marcel Ponseele (a neighbour of Bruges). Notion is a fantastic notation and performance program, but it can't guess an interpretation. You have to do that yourself.

You can leave the Notion presets if you like, using your own keyswitches but that is time consuming and not directly rewarding. I'm still struggling with them (working about one year with VSL), but bit by bit and with the help of many friendly users, the light starts shining...

    Thanks for sharing,

    Max

  • Max, thanks for the insights and the link.  It's very much appreciated.  I certainly can hear the relative flatness of the performance I've recorded in comparison.  I understand what you mean about interpretation of the piece.

One thing that I noticed is that the oboe lead in the recording you linked to is very interpretive.  It is quite decorative and reflects the line in the printed music I used only in a very schematic way.  Is this normal for baroque music?  Was the actual published music only to be considered an outline or guide for interpretation?  I have no formal music training, and so this is new territory for me.

    Thanks again for listening!

    Hi Micheal

Well done. You also treated the dynamic very well - also with the orchestra.

My tip will probably improve the orchetra even more:

It seems that you used the sustain-, repetition- or legato articulation for the "daaa, daaa, daaa, daaa" of the orchestra.

I believe that these repetitions would sound more natural with the "detache long" articulation. In addition to this articulation you also

should use the CC64 controller (pedal). This will play these detaches in their full lenth so that the will play into each other.

I had this kind of accompaniment lots of time and always turned to the methode above.

Give it a try in minimum.

    Two examples:

BTW I use(d) the accompaniments for playing my sopranosax...

    All the best

  • Beat, thanks very much!

I actually changed the orchestral eighth notes in the second take from sustain to semi-staccato.  I felt that they lost some presence when they were all sustain, and that they needed a little bit of air.  That may not be quite correct strictly speaking, but it sounded right to me.  I also changed some of them to staccato just for variety at the beginning, middle and end of the piece.

But I'll try your technique with sustained notes and a pedal control and see what happens.  Thanks for the suggestions and the links.  They sound great!

    Hello again Michael

For your Albinoni it's only the long detache articulation with CC64 which will work (extended Library).

    Have a nice weekend
