  • Transposing Trick / Dimension Violins issue

So I'm on this thing yet, creating Violins II for Dimension violins.

I've read what has been told about this transposing workaround, ok. I did the trick with "03 VI-P1_RE_perf-leg_noVib" patches.

I thought there was one sample per note and I could go to 1/2 tone pitch (transpose +1, pitch down then) but it's not the case unfortunately. It's quite ok for legato notes (some issues there too btw, pb with A2/A#2). But when playing separate attacked notes, things really don't work as expected:

    G#2/A2, A#2/B2, C#3/D3, D#3/E3, F3/F#3, G#3/A3 etc are strictly the same samples. Could anyone tell me about ? I always read about Dimension's one note/one sample :-/

So it looks like +1 transposing should be avoided, even with Dimension and we would have to go to one tone tranposition... Not that good imo...

  • Following I re-read all topics about transposition trick. Some say here and there that half-tone transposition is not possible for SE, due to whole-tones sampling, but ok for Instruments Collections and Dimension, regarding the "each semitone sample".

Trying to figure it out I had a look to the Dimension Strings overview and here's what is said:

Full Play Range on Each String

We’ve captured the full play range of each string (approx. one octave plus a fifth)

Should we understand one note/one sample, every semitone ? I'm sorry to say that's not true. I had a further test with Sustain, Staccato, fp, sfz patches. Behaviour is the same. Dimension are not sampled by each semitone.

Conclusion is: HALF-TONE TRANSPOSITION TRICK SHOULD BE DEFINATELY AVOIDED WITH DIMENSION VIOLINS. Whole-tone is ok.

Maybe I'm missing something so please let me know if you have any idea about.

  • Anyone encountered this ?

  • I haven't tried doubling since DImension Strings is used in addition to other divisi strings so I have strings overloaded, coming out of everywhere.  But I too would like clarification in case I ever do want to double them since my habit is to double by transposing a half-tone.

  • Back to transposition, again...

So I'll definitely go to 1 tone up as told before. I would have been pleased to have some clarification from Vienna staff btw...

One question: still no way to have some global pitch down on VI pro? Is the CC pitch within DAW the only way to go?

  • I'm interested in getting this to work properly too.  It would be great if there was a way to implement the transposition entirely within VIPro, without using the pitchbend control.

Perhaps someone on the VI Staff can desribe the recommended method for getting a 2nd Violins from Dimension Strings?

VI Pro does have a global pitch slider.
