  • [SOLVED] In Sibelius, when triggering techniques in Violin II, it switches to Violin I channel

Hello I have configured a manual sound set as described for a string solo quintet. (2 violins, 1 viola, 1 cello and 1 double bass). I have assigned both violins in Sibelius 7.5 to channels 1 and 2, and chosen those channels in Viena Ensemble accordingly. Everything is OK until I put a detache technique text in the Violin II staff. At that point, the staff is redirected to the first violin and all sound goes through there. Surprisingly, this only happens after an "arco" or "ord." indication (which follow a "pizz." indcation). If I place de detache technique before, it works normally. It not only happens with detache, but with any technique. I'm using OSX Yosemite, the Vienna Special Edition Volume 1 + PLUS and Sibelius 7.5.1 Thank you in advance Lucas

  • Hello Lucas!

It can have different reasons when articulations don't get changed as supposed. Please check the following things:
    - Do you have the Sibelius Instrument "Solo Violin" twice in your score? If the second violin uses a Violin 2 (or Violin II) instrument, it will not work, as this instrument is for ensemble strings. The program
you select on the Manual Sound Set page has to match the instrument. If you are not sure which instrument you have chosen for the second violin, add a new Solo Violin from the Add or Remove Instruments menu, cut out the content of the old instrument and paste it into the new one.
    - Did you try to set up outputs or channels in the Sibelius mixer? If yes, please reset all outputs to (Auto), as manual output settings in the Sibelius mixer can mess up the playback.
    - More help can be found in the Troubleshooting section of the "Optimizing Sibelius Playback" manual.

  • Thank you for your reply! I've used the string quartet template of Sibelius, which uses the Solo Violin Patch. Anyway I tried to change it using the "change instrument" command and later removing it and adding another "solo violin" staff. Still no luck. After the "detache" articulation, it switches to the Violin I channel. I tried to change in the mixer to (Auto) (it was set to "(unallocated)). Still no luck. I think I've tried everything in the troubleshooting section of the manual, but it didn't work. Oddly, if I place an "ord." technique text, everything goes back to normal, And if I place the detache technique before the first "pizz." mark, it works OK too.

  • So do you now have a Solo Violin staff in your score with an instrument change to Solo Violin again? I haven't tried this yet, but this might be the cause of your problem, because Sibelius might think you have three Solo Violins in your score, but only reserved two channels for Solo Violin on the Manual Sound Sets page.

Anyway, adding an "ord." command to reset the Sound ID from time to time can help when too much Sound IDs have been added and the articulation changes don't work as supposed.

  • The "ord." mark seems to actually mess up things. In summary "detache" technique after the pair "pizz" - "ord" or "pizz" - "arco" causes the issue of switching to Violin I. If I place the "ord." mark after the detache, it works normal again. If I place the detache before the first "pizz" it works ok too. I've tried to change instrument to solo violin to de whole score just in case, but it was only one of the tests I've performed. The issue happens with the base string quartet template.

  • I can't reproduce this behaviour with the String quartet template and the VE Special Edition PLUS sound set here. If you want to, you can send your score and Playback Configuration (xml file and files in the data folder) to  support [at] vsl [dot] co [dot] at and I will take a look at it. Playback Configurations can be found under
    Users/your username/Library/Application Support/Avid/Sibelius 7.5/Playback Configurations
The Users/your username/Library folder is hidden by default. To get access go to the folder Users/your username. Then choose Go/Go to folder and enter “Library”.
