  • Feature Request VI Pro - Controller Speed Ratio Setting

    Hi VSL Team,

I would like to put in a eature request for VI Pro please.  I would like the ability to tell VI Pro, to move a controller slider at a variable ratio.  For instance:

I map Velocity X-Fade to Modwheel

I also ecide to map Expression to Modwheel so I can control both at the same time with the Modwheel.

Now I want to tell the Expression control slider to move only say .5 or .75 percent of 1.  so maybe the ratio would be

1:.5, or 1:.75 which might translate actually to 2:1, or 2.5:1.  In that number the first number is the modwheel and the second the expression so that when I get a value of 1 or 2 on the modwheel turn (say from 0 to 2 for velocity x-fade) the expression slider will move as well but only from 0 to 1, instead of up to 2 like the CC1 controller slider did.

Hope that makes sense and isn't fo confusing.

If this is not possible, is it possible to tell Cubase right ont he midi track, as it is receiving the midi data from my controller to do this limiting for me?

    Thanks!

  • Hi,

I know that´s not what you are looking for explicitly, but did you check if the assignable curves for each controller (on the MapControl Page in Advanced View) could be helpful? I´m always adjusting those with Velocity Xfade and Expression for different instruments, when I´m using a breath controller.

  • Hi Paul,

Actually I didn't even think of that.  Perhaps that will help.  I will try that tonight and get back to you.

I think the ratio controller setting would rock though.  I found out that Cubase can do what I am asking in terms of ratio, however, the issue is that it won't see my CC1 as Expression as obviously it's CC11.  Only the VI Pro player knows that I have CC11 mapped to CC1 modwheel.  So the option would be to control it in the player itself.

Thanks again and I will let you know how it goes later!

  • Hi Paul,

So I tried playing with these tonight and they are pretty close.  The only thing that would be nice is if I could prevent them from ever hitting 127.  So for instance, I could have velocity x-fade CC1 go to 0-127 and Expression from 0-90 and then set the curve to my taste.  This way I could ensure that I am getting to the loudest layer of the sample, but my expression isn't screaming full blast with it.

It's pretty close to what I need but no matter what I do, it causes a very big jump at some point which is more than I want to experience during controlling it live.

  • Hi,

There are many controllers available in VI PRO, and we had to draw a line at some point...
I understand your request, and have noted it down for our wish-list, but as it is the first request for such a feature since we introduced VI PRO 4 years ago, this is not the highest priority.

  • I really thought you would be able to do this in Cubase with a simple input transformer, but argh, when I tried it I see that once you change modulation to expression you can't send through modulation any more. They should add a "copy" command to the input transformer. I love Cubase but I wish they would create something like Logic's Environment.

In any case, the best way to control expression and modulation at the same time is to use a multiball in Lemur. It gives you total control over the dynamic envelope. Or, with a little knowledge in Lemur scripting you can have several faders that output as a ratio of each other.

  • Thank you for that information.  I will talk to my Lemur programmer about this and see what he comes up with.

I still would love to see this feature either appear here, or in Cubase/Studio One.  I want to control it from a hard modwheel because it's easier during a live performance than a slider on an IPad.
