  • V E Pro server not advertising

I just reinstalled my Yosemite system  from scratch, and everything is great except now suddenly my macbook pro slave machine'instances are not showing up in in th VE pro plugin. I can type in the IP address and the name of the preserved instance and connect that way, but this is going to make it very finicky to open projects.

This used to work great, and the manual assumes this shouldn't be a problem.

I have found very old posts describing the same issue, is there anyone out there who has had similar experience on recent systems, or even better solved the riddle?

    I'm on a 2011 CORE i5 iMAC and a 2013 Macbook pro, both with 16gigs RAM.

    Thanks guys!

    Ben

  • What DAW software are you running ?

  • Yosemite is a very shabby version of OSX, to say the least when using Cubase but I reckon that it's just as shabby with other DAW's. I just rolled back to a recent MBP (time machine) backup when I received my new Mac Pro with factory Yosemite, and after that said 'rollback', VSL seems to 'remember' the Yosemite boot, so I lost most of my licenses.

I'm seeking a bit of help myself but I'm under impression that VE doesn't understand the traffic between 10.10.x and other systems like it did with 10.9.x I just want my licenses back :D

  • Cubase Pro 8 is a bit suspect at the moment with networking VE Pro,  so experiment using Cubase 7.5 or earlier.

You wont lose any VSL licences, as they are on the Vienna Key - not the computer drives.

  • So nice to at least be able to chat to folk having the same agonies... VE Pro giveth and it taketh away , LOL:)

I'm on Ableton Live actually. Was working so great before, with nice big orchestral templates loaded that I could pick from.

Andy I see you said on another thread that you got used to typing in the IP address... hope that won't be me. I'm pretty sure it's a Yosemite thing, as I am still on the same version of Live that I was on when it was working.

    Ben

  • My problem with VE Pro is a Cubase Pro 8 problem, as every other version of Cubase is fine. (It may only be a PC thing as well)

It is just that the only hope to get it working again is if VSL update something to get it working, as the chances of Steinberg rectifying it, is near to zero this side of 2016.

  • Same problem here on Yosemite - the issue for me is the direct connect networking - the instancaes on the local network connection (i.e. thorough the router IP address are still advertising) but when I try even manualling inputting my dedicated Ethernet address on the directly connected computers in Yosemite VSL won't even find those!  hoping for a VSL fix to this issues ASAP - or a least a hack on Yosemite we can do to get thsi working again.

Logic X, Yosemite on both computers slave and host.

  • I am running Logic Pro X here under Yosemite with a slave Win 7 PC and VE Pro is advertising just fine on both machines here.

  • wow it's working!

I tried unchecking the "advertise on local network" option, then restarting VE pro and rechecking the option, to kind of rejig things. No joy instantly, but after a while the instances popped up. Hope it's not going to come and go.

    Ben

  • Jeff I'.m struggling to understand -  is your advertising working but you can't connect?

  • Damn , it's gone again. That's the worst when the issue is unpredictable.

Owuld really appreciate some help from VSL support? Will try using other VST hosts to see what happens.

Hey Sharkfin- here's my problem:  The mac pro has TWO ethernet ports - one ai use for general network stuff, and has an IP address through my network router - i.e. 10.1. 0.XXX - the 2nd ethernet port is DIRECT connected to the slave machine (which has previously autoconfigured a direct connect ad-hock network to the slave machince, insuring all of the VEP traffic doesn't have to share bandwidth with other ethernet traffic.  Those IP addresses are different - 169.254.XXX.XX etc - I have the same 2 ethernet ports on the Slave machine - the proglem is that now in Yosemite and with the latest build, I only see the 10.1.0. options to connect to - which work, but don't give me the previous option I've always used for cleaner hassle free audio between the two macince - I'm goign to file a bug report with the VSL folks, but but if they are reading this, please help!  thanks

PS - in prev. OSX and VE pro builds I would see TWO options to connect to the same instance - one through the dedicated port and the other through the ethernet switch/router setup.

  • Hi Jeff,

You should definitely use static IP addresses, and avoid 169.x.x.x addresses (these are automatically assigned by your computer and tend to change).

    Please do the following:

Manually assign one of these IP addresses to the computers and ethernet ports in your setup: 192.168.0.x or 10.0.0.x, and assign a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0, then it should work.

  • thanks Paul - this is for the directo connect ports - trying now! Jeff

  • yep, that did it - all fixed, thanks Paul! Reseved in the 198. range for the direct connect ethernet ports - (the 10.1 ones were already reseved to fixed #s by my router0

direct connect ports advertising and connecting now! - no more time machine and network traffic hassles screwing up audio streaming - big THANKS-

  • Hi Jeff,

Thanks for the update, that´s great to hear!

  • Hi Paul

thanks so much for your help. I'm still struggling though, networking is not my forte.... can I not find step by step instructions somewhere? nothing in the VE pro manual.

what I did was open up network prefs and choose manually assign , and created ip addresses as you said... 192.168.0.2 for my Imac and 192.168.0.3 for my macbook, and subnets masks as you said.

You mentioned chainging the computers and ethernet prots... how is this done and how does it affect my wireless network settings?

    thanks again!

    Ben

  • Hello Ben,

Networking is not always easy, but there are a lot of explanations avavilable on the web.

Please send me some screenshots of your network settings and a short description of your setup and problems to support@vsl.co.at, I´ll see how I can help you.

Just to have said it once again: Network support is actually not part of our support work, it can get very complex, and a professional network specialist will be a much better choice.

    Best,
    Paul
