  • Creating vibrato with a breath controller

Does anyone know how you can create vibrato using a breath controller with VI samples, particularly brass and wind instruments? I do not like the sampled vibrato on most of the instruments as it is not controllable and sounds to consistent, not very realistic. I'd like to be able to use my breath controller to create vibrato using non-vibrato patches. Can this be done? Thanks Mike

There are two things to consider here. Some instruments create Vibrato by amplitude, some by pitch and some use a bit of both. As Vienna Instruments are not designed to work this way, I think that you're on a hiding to nothing. However, you could try it with the Brass samples and see if it worked. I don't have the TEC with the bite control, so can't test it for you. It certainly doesn't really work with the earlier model.

TBH (and this is the wrong forum to discuss it) I think that if you want this much control over Vibrato you should maybe thing about getting a product that is designed to be used this way, because I think that trying to get VI to do this successfully will cause you more grief than it's worth. Not that you shouldn't test it for yourself, of course. 😉

  • Thanks, DG.  Sorry about this not being the right forum to discuss this on.  I recently saw some videos on YouTube about the TEC breath controller by Mike Verta, and he was able to get a beautiful personalized vibrato on a trumpet sample patch.  I don't know what brand of sample it was, but I thought it could be done on any sample set, including VI..  What a shame VI did not think of adding that feature!  The choice of non vibrato or constant vibrato (or even pregressive vibrato ) really limits the realism one can get out of VI samples.

I have invested massive amounts of money in VI samples, as I am sure we all have.  The idea of now having to buy something new that can get the personalized vibrato I would like is pretty disapointing.  Do you think there is anyway that VI could add such a feature to existing sample sets?  Perhaps as an update?

    Thanks,

    Mike

  • Why don't you just use the breath controller to send pitch bend data (or re-routed CC data to the pitch) with non-vibrato patches ?

As long as the pitch range is scaled fine enough,  why wouldn't this work?

Andy, I was just experimenting with that and got it to work pretty darn well!  I can use the breath controller to crossfade and the bite control to and very very nice vibrato.  It takes some practice, but it can be done!

Great minds think a like!  😊

  • Glad you got what you wanted. Without the bite control it sounded dreadful when I tried it. Perhaps you could be good enough to post an example of what you managed to achieve.
