  • Question about VEPRO and Outputs and how that relates to CPU in DAW

    Hi there,

    1. If I have everything from an instance of Vienna routed through one output, (The default), does that take up less CPU in your DAW, then if you activate more outputs and run them out individually?

    2. If I have a surround version of VEPRO in my DAW, (Cubase) and I'm only sending out 2 channels (Left and Right), does that take up more processing power in my DAW to read the 6 channels, but only 2 with info, vs. just a ST input?

    3. Is there a way to convert surround versions of the plug ins to ST ones of the same plugin?

I write in surroundm so I built my template in 5.1 using surround versions of the VEPro plug in. Half of the instruments are in 5.1, and half of them are in ST, still going out of the 5.1 output...

I really starting running out of power fast, so I thought maybe I'm wasting resources on the other 4 channels that arent being used.

Then on some of the 5.1 insteuments, I've activated sometimes 8 additional 5.1 outputs so that instruments can have their own return in my DAW (Cubase), but I'm thinking now, that adds siginifcant more CPU usage.

    Thank you VERY MUCH!!!!!

Yes. For instance I just removed two outs in one viframe and saw the user % of CPU reduce from ~40% to ~36% immediately.

Yeah, I recommend a change of paradigm. Before VE Pro 5 and the automation mapping, I was relying on the 'old ways' of dealing with the instrument channels in Cubase, but the more you have the harder a job your machine has. I still tend to separate certain things and create group channels in Cubase but this isn't really necessary as you can automate everything on the VE Pro side and mix via that, rather than mix in Cubase. Cubase as a waystation for a final master bus to print from. Now, some people require stems but if not, why not cut way back on outputs to Cubase.

  • That's fantastic info!!!!

Does 1 quad instance of vienna take up less power than 2 ST outputs actiaved?

  • EDIT: I didn't connect 'quad' with 'surround' from before. I'm not sure what 'ST' represents. Stereo? All things being equal I reckon four outs is four outs. However I lack experience with any surround from VE Pro.

I assumed there was some overhead gained through ditching a couple of outs, but I checked it before making a BS reply and there it was. I wouldn't have thought that much. I believe that the more stuff that's in a channel outputted the more difference, and these had a number of FX on them.
