  • VE + PC slave how to install? what else to buy?

    Hi all,

    Hi all,

I will soon buy a PC slave. I currently have a MAC pro early 2008, with 32 GB, 2x quad core but it’s very slow with the EWQL Hollywood series. I have Logic pro 9.

So as I said I have EWQL Hollywood series (complete composers bundle), NI Komplete and other various VSTs.

I have been looking around forums and found different answers.  I would like to know how to connect the pc Slave and master (Mac pro). I know that I would need Ethernet cards on both computers. So do I need just one cable to connect both computers on the Ethernet cards or do I need Gigabit network switch?

Do I need to install VE pro server on my master or just on the PC slave?

What about all the VSTs, do I need to install them on both or can I just install them on the PC slave?

Also, if my PC slave doesn’t have a monitor, how do you work this out, especially when it comes to mixing? Do you get a monitor for the pc slave or do you have a remote desktop software (I have teamviewer)? If, for example, I use teamviewer for that, wouldn’t that be annoying when it comes to mixing the project on VE? Or do you use another remote desktop?

Is it possible to mix the tracks from VE to Logic knowing that, in Logic, the VE tracks are MIDI?

Would that be better to have a monitor always on the PC slave?

Sorry for all my questions, I just don’t want to buy a PC slave blindly!

    Welcome Marliyn,

To make VE PRO work, you need a working GigaBit Ethernet connection, and as a minimum a network cable connecting you computers.

The software is installed on both the master and the slave. You don´t need a license on the master, if you don´t want to host any plug-ins in a VE PRO Server.

The plug-ins need to be installed on the computer where you want to use them.

Regarding monitors: In my opinion, it is much more comfortable to have a separate monitor for the slave computer (if you´re not working with a static setup), but you can also use screensharing applications like Remote Desktop Control or Teamviewer (which will be slower, I think).

    You´re also asking:
"Is it possible to mix the tracks from VE to Logic knowing that, in Logic, the VE tracks are MIDI?"

=> Not sure I understand... But it´s quite simple with virtual instruments: You send MIDI to VE PRO and you get an audio signal back. Routing is flexible.

If you want to test-drive VE PRO (also on your master computer), please register your ViennaKey here.

Alternatively, you can also use a Steinberg or Arturia Key, if you have one or can get one faster (they are usually available in music stores, and it´s the same copy protection system, "eLicenser").

Please let me know when this is done (send a mail to support@vsl.co.at, with a link to this thread), I will send a demo license right away.

    Best,
    Paul
