  • Sibelius and VSL jazz drums

I can't seem to get any sibelius instruments to trigger the VSL jazz drum kits. I need a very small drum kit to include in an orchestral score - playing bass drum, snare and tambourine.

I may be missing the obvious but would like a push in the right direction please.

  • Hello Ross!

You can use the Sibelius General MIDI sound set and load a General MIDI preset in the Vienna Instruments player. Then you trigger the Jazz drums with drum set notation. Please note that a tambourine is not included in the Vienna Jazz Drums, but as you also have the Percussion library registered, you can add a Tambourine on an extra staff with the Percussion sound set.

    Best regards,
    Andi

Can you elaborate on "drum set notation"? Can I put all the instruments on one staff?

    Thanks.

  • Hello caign!

You can find the Jazz Drums General MIDI presets under D - Percussion/88 Jazz Drumset/01 VI Presets/General MIDI.

For drum set notation, use one of the instruments in the Sibelius/Add Instruments menu under Drum Kit and Drum Set. To see which notehead on which line triggers which kind of sound, go to the Edit Instrument menu and look under Edit Staff Type.

    Excellent, thank you Andi!

And for the Sibelius unwary: You MUST use crossed note heads for Sibelius to play the hi hat, as stated in the manual, and you get an open hi hat using the Harmonic/Open symbol on the fourth page of the Keypad. But note, it does not play back as open when you click the note, only when you Play.

  • Hi

In my experience there is no good way to use VSL Jazz drums in combination with Sibelius.

When using the VSL MIDI soundset it will mess up the playback of your other VSL instruments even though they appear to use the proper VSL soundset. It shouldn't, but it does.

The pitched instrument in combination with the VI Presets seemed to work for a while. Eventually the sound just disappeared without any apperant reason. It was not handy at all to use anyways.

Time for a 'VSL Jazz Drums Soundset' and a custom Sibelius instrument, I'd say.

    Sincerely yours

    Pieter

  • Hello Pieter!

I can't reproduce your problems here. Did you activate the "Use manual sound set" checkbox and assign a drum set program on the Manual Sound Sets page for the Jazz Drums?

You can find more possible reasons and solutions for playback problems in the Troubleshooting chapter of the "Optimizing Sibelius Playback" manual.
