  • Solo Strings Advice?

I'm looking for some advice on how to make this excerpt sound more realistic in tone and performance.  I'm using VEP 5, VEI Pro 2, Solo Strings 1 Extended, and Sibelius.  The composition isn't really 'composed', yet.  I just have a few themes in place to learn the software.  I've been watching videos, reading posts, etc, and I'm pretty happy with the results, but have a long way to go.  Any advice would be welcomed.

  • I listened to it several times and i really like the musical ideas.

I am not a VSL expert (i pick up your words) but i suppose you might achieve a better performance only playing each instrument with a sequencer, controlling the Velocity X-Fade with the modulation wheel. I dare giving you this kind of advice because i am currently trying this method (i notated my first track instead) and it gives a more realistic touch...

  • Thank you for your response!

I'm not sure what to do with the Velocity X-Fade using the mod wheel.  Do I increase it when changing notes, and decrease when the new note is triggered?  Do you read about the technique somewhere?  I saw something in the documentation, but if there's more to it, I'd like to learn it.

    Again, thank you for replying.

  • You're welcome

Unfortunately i learned about this technique only from this video:

at 7.05 they show how to use it with sustained/legato notes... perhaps you've already seen that...

you can either increase the central part of the note or increase the attack, i think you can do any dynamic variation you'd wish to perform with a real bow...i hope this is helpful...

    this other video is interesting

  • Hi Ghoststrat,

I also found these Mike Verta video's helpful on this subject also:

    Hope they're useful.
