  • Do unused but available VEP audio outputs use CPU power?

    Hi Paul et al—

Now that we have the MAS version of the VEP plug-in, I'm trying to make the leap to merging all the VEPs in my Vienna Server into one big VEP. My question is this: If I increase the number of Audio Outputs per VEP instance to, say, 128 in the VEP preferences, does the mere fact that I've increased the number of available outputs stress the CPU of the computer hosting the VEP instance? Or is it only when the extra audio outputs are actually assigned that CPU overhead increases signficantly?

    Thanks,

    Peter

  • Hi Peter,

Increasing the amount of audio outputs will increase network throughput minimally in VE Pro. Only when actual audio is sent to the buses (as in not silence) will they count as full network throughput and subsequently increase the network usage and potentially also the DAW's CPU meter.

  • OK, thanks, Paul. And what about the number of MIDI ports per instance—does the mere fact of making more MIDI ports available stress the CPU of either the VEP host computer or the DAW computer?

  • Hello again,

Depends on the sequencer. Cubase for example needs longer time to start up, preparing multiple MIDI Ports. Doesn´t stress the CPU much more.

    Hi,

I´m not sure, but feel free to give it a try 😉

  • Start-up delay doesn't seem noticeably different in DP. My question really pertained to whether or not the existence of add'l MIDI ports per instance stresses the CPU of either the master or the slave computer, but it sounds like the answer is no.
