  • James Horner.

What a great shame to hear of James Horner's death in an aeroplane accident. A Royal College of Music academic in the 1970s and later music study in the USA, he certainly came up with some memorable music.

I will always have a special fondness for his scores to Sneakers and The Name of the Rose.

  • I was going to write here something too but you got in there first Paul. I instigated and participated in the special we broadcast on the national radio 3 here.

I agree about 'Sneakers' (one of my favourite flicks); not many remember the movie, let alone one of the better Horner soundtracks. It was one of the main tracks I suggested that we played along with some other less known Horner tracks - especially from the early days, pre 'Avatar' and 'Titanic'. I picked the last track from 'Brainstorm', the beautifully orchestrated 'Cocoon' (with all the Goldsmith wind calls etc.), and suggested that we finish with Horner's 'Amazing Grace' from '...Khan', for his own farewell, among other things.

I also suggested in quasi-macabre way, that should Horner had remained an anonymous concert composer, he would never have afforded the private jet that killed him prematurely. I wonder which life he would have picked given the chance. Very Faustian!
