  • Pops and Clicks in Logic using VEPro Server and Play

    Hi,

A while back I was having some issues with my systems, but I haven't had time to properly investigate it but it is annoying me too much now and is making my work a lot harder to do! Here are two videos of the issue, sorry for the rubbish camerawork! Attached are also screenshots of the various settings I have for VEPro running Play, which is on the slave pc (details in signature), and the logic screenshots (mac) which has the VEPro server plugin running. I can only upload 5 at a time so I'll post follow up messages with the rest.

The issue I'm having is that I'm getting severe distortion/delay effects and pops and clicks when playing the midi in using my keyboard as Logic is playing. When I don't have the video running, I'm not getting the clicks, but as soon as I press play, or try to listen to tracks back, I suddenly get a huge amount of clicks and pops. The firewall is off on the slave PC, and the connection is via ethernet. Both systems have internet (wifi) switched off from startup and it still does it. I know it's a problem with the play/VEP setup as there is no issue when using logic's own built-in instruments. It only happens to play instruments (I don't have any other libraries so cannot test if it also does it to them).

This problem has been plaguing me since I bought the samples and VEPro, so any advice would be hugely appreciated as it'll make working so much easier once it's fixed, at the moment it's near impossible.

    Thanks,

    Peter

  • Hi Peter,

did you meanwhile solve your problem? I have exactly the same issues and have no idea how to deal with it. I have a Macpro (dust bin) and a slave PC.

VEPro runs fine until I press Play in Logic X. The distortion also happens when I bounce offline. CPU-load is low on both machines. I can't even play a single line when Logic is running. It also happens without a video.

    Thanks for info,

    Torsten

  • I recently upgraded my systems so I've got the slave pc and a 4GHz iMac 5k host now. The problems have mostly gone away, although I occasionally get crackles and pops and a popup saying 'error while trying to sync audio and midi: sample rate ..... not recognised'. I don't know what causes this, but for the most part a quick pause and then play sorts it out. The main issue I was having before has been resolved with the upgrade, partly because I'm now hosting some of the smaller samples/ones I don't use as much on the new host, so the slave can focus all its power on the more system intensive samples (I use VEPro on both machines for ease of project management). I have yet to try a full template with the new systems, but I found on the old system it became bearable if I only kept the instruments I absolutely needed connected. I'm still getting about 90% cpu usage on the 3.5GHz 6-core slave though when I hit play (10-12% idle), so I'm not completely it's totally set up right, or if it is, these samples are just very system intensive, even for my specs!

  • Did you try to put process buffer to "LARGE"

Do you have a SATA III interfaces on your Master and SLAVE ?

Can you explain a bit better the samples and disk configuration on your slave and master ?

  • Is it possible that you have inadverdently connected via WiFI? Turn off WiFI on the slave PC and then reconnect.

    Thanks for your input!

Strange thing: Wifi is off. Connection seems stable. I can play up to 8 VEPro instances live simultaneously in Logic as long as logic is not running. In the moment when I press Start or Rec everything is distorted immediately. Not one single note is possible. Becomes clear and clean again in the moment I press Stop. Changing the buffer in Logic from 64 to 512 doesn't help. Changing the VEPro Latency from 2 to 4 Buffers doesn't help. Same effect in same intensity. At first I connected the computers via Router. Meanwhile I made a direct connection (Second network as the Macpro has two independent LAN plugs. Now there's a LAN wired from PC to Mac directly). Nothing helps.

*Edit* I just found out that the same distortion happens when using VEPro on Mac only (without external PC server slave). So it probably has something to do with LogicX / VEPro / Kontakt 5. Kontakt Memory server is off. What's the best way to set multiprocessor settings? Any other idea I could try? I'm running out of options.

Very odd. I am running the latest version of LP X with the latest version of VE Pro 5 on Mac hosting my Kontakt 5 orchestral stuff and on the PC slave  for my  EW Hollywood Orchestra template and I have none of this. It runs like butter.

  • Yepp, I was used to too!

My Mac is on 10.10.5, Kontakt 5 and VEPro latest versions. Logic 10.2, PC is Windows 7. And no distortion when Logic is not running! :-/

  • Well i recently updated to 10.11.1, but  it was fine before that as  well. Have you tried creating a new User is OSX?

  • Just found out: I have some Vienna reverbs in my template (in the instruments channels for sordino filtering). When I bypass them it's going better. Strange... why do they make problems only when Logic is running? And Cpu is far from being maxed out?

even with server on same machine.
