  • Things Are Better

This is to let you know I will not be using Vienna Special Edition in the future. I just consolidated a long orchestral work, merging the various instruments from my various libraries, so I have just one flute, oboe etc line rather, than 2 or 3. (I then export to notation software). Then, I started to delete the soft synths, exept Garritan, which loads fast (unlike Vienna, which takes several minutes - another reason I am done with this software). Unfortunately, I forgot that when I try to delete the vienna player, it crashes sonar. Because I had not done this in awhile, I forget about this nasty little glitch, so I hadn't saved. 2 hours of work down the drain. Add it to the many other hours I've lost over the past 2 years. So, my next project I will be looking to purchase another library, one that loads in a reasonable ampount of time, and does not crash Sonar. No, it's not Sonar's fault. vienna is the only one that does it. GPO, EWSO, Cinematic Strings don't do it. Only vienna. Not anymore.

  • It would still be good to make a habit of quick-saving whenever you do anything substantial, that's what people generally do. Physically it's quite undemanding.

  • Hello Michael,

Sorry to hear about that. Just checked our Support Database, only found 3 emails from you (regarding a data change).

If you feel like this has not even been reported, please let us know the software versions you are working with, and ideally also send us the crash-report or crash-dmp file (location is shown after the crash).

Please send to support@vsl.co.at, so that we can take a look.

    Best,
    Paul

  • Giving it another go here (and sorry for the whining, I just was very frustrated at the time). I came to the conclusion that the sounds are too good to do without. This time, I'm saving the player as a template, so hopefully that will load things faster. Plus, I updated to the latest Vienna Inst. and Ensemble. Also, I have discovered that if I just put my computer to sleep, I can open my project much more quickly. (I do have to close Sonar 8.5 though, as it loses track of UR-22 my audio interface when waking up). I'll report back after I get things set up, hopefully with better news. Again, sorry about the whining. This is a great product.

  • Hi Michael,

    That´s great news!

Let me know if you´re running into trouble, best with a detailed description and screenshots sent to support@vsl.co.at

I'm very sorry to hear about your problems Michael.  I understand how frustrating it can be.  I mean why can't stuff JUST WORK!!!

But Sonar 8.5?  That's like 7 years old isn't?  I don't even think Cakewalk supports it anymore do they? Have you been having other stability issues?  What kind of system are you running?

If you continue to have stability issues you might want to bite the bullet and consider upgrading Sonar (no, I don't work for Cakewalk).  Or see if you can get a hold of the old Vienna Player software.

Hey Paul, I know it's legacy but is that old Vienna Player available anywhere? Just curious.

I've used Sonar 7 with Vienna and never had a problem deleting Vienna instances but that was the old Vienna player.  I was afraid that if I tried that with the new VIP or VIP Pro I would set off a nuclear explosion engulfing the entire Western United States in a mushroom cloud.

Currently, I use Sonar Platinum and everything runs like a champ.

  • Thank you Paul and Jason. Yes, I've been debating upgrading to Sonar Producer for some time now. I have the demo. But I've also been been fooling around with Reaper. What intrigues me there is that they are in the process of implementing a notation editor, which will be far more advanced than Sonar's. Also, they are working on a Linux build. Amazing developers they have there.

The good news is that, by not shutting my computer down, I can load my project quickly, even when closed.

Another issue solved,  maybe by updating the player: the instruments no longer lag behind my other ones.

With respect to the crashes, I won't be doing anything to cause that for awhile. It only happens when I consolidate a project, before exporting to Notion. If it still happens, I know how to handle it. I first delete the instruments from the player, then I can safely delete the synth.  But it will be awhile before I'm at that stage with my current project.

My system is an i7, 16 GB Ram (max=32). Two WD Black 1TB HDD's. Windows 7 Pro.

All in all, things are much better. I don't know why I let myself get so frazzled. The problems are solvable. I should have asked for help instead of blowing off steam. Won't happen again.

  • Michael,

I have nothing horribly relevant to add here... at all. But I just want to say:

1 - We all get frazzled and we all have days... or even years where we do very easily. At least I do, and I suspect anyone who claims they never has is full of... well something. ;) I'm getting better at it finally, only after 10 years of failing at it miserably.

2 - I'm glad you stuck with it. Trust me, I've run into problems with several companies. But in the end, the sound is just too worth it! RAM + SSD + Reliable Software = happy composing. I have 128GB of RAM and 2.5TB of SSD (some in Raid) and I'm still yearning for another 32GB of RAM. Seriously, it never ends. You are being sucked into a vortex!!! But trust me, it's one worth being sucked into.

    Cheers!

    Sean

  • 128 GB of RAM? Holy Maine Frame Batman! I actually have not heard of anyone having that much. I am going to upgrade to 32...I say rather "sheepishly" (hidden pun there).

I appreciate the brief counseling session, Sean. Fortunately, I feel that I have begun to turn the corner. The "issue" is that I retired two years ago. It takes awhile to adjust to a change like that, for me anyway. But it's finally happening.

You're right, the sounds are too good not to use. Not all of them; I use a hodge-podge of libraries, and it's sufficient for now. Hopefully, someday there will be one sample library to rule them all, that will work really well, not require national genome project-level of resources; etc.

Now, if I could just figure out what caused that BSOD a few days ago...

  • Hi.  I also happen to still be using Sonar 8.5.3, although it is on a different computer than my Vienna software, so a different setup from yours.  Since Sonar 8.5.3 is fully compatible with Windows 7, I wouldn't think it would cause any conflicts (though one never knows).

  • Thanks for your input, Noldar12 (is that in the Sirius sector?). I'm currently considering upgrading to W10 on my music rig, also upgrading Sonar to the latest version. It does run pretty well at present, but I do continue to have problems, like a recent BSOD. Also, I like to put it to sleep after a session, as my project loads much faster that way. But sometimes when I switch between different versions of my project, Sonar won't load, and I have to log off and log in to fix that. Plus, I have a long-standing issue with using EWSO basses, which causes a crash every now and then. So it makes sense to upgrade Sonar at least. I don't like the intrusiveness of W10, but I keep my music rig offline except when upgrading software or checking a forum, so maybe I could stomach it. Lots of decisions!

  • Michael,

I know exactly what you mean. I just quit my day job to compose full time. It's different obviously, but it's certainly an adjustment. Congrats on retiring! Although let me tell you, 128GB of RAM just aint enough! lol ;) Although I'm using it in a way that requires more memory. Kontakt's Time Machine Pro algorithm sounds considerably better and allows me the flexibility I often take advantage of. But it requires loading more of my template into RAM.

I say it all the time. One company to rule them all is something I'd love to see happen. I've even written my own "sampling standard" which I hold libraries to in comparison. It basically takes the best of all companies and maximizes it in a way I don't think the market or an investor could really handle paying for. It essentially would allow one to write just about anything and have a legitimate mock-up of it. It would probably require 2TB of RAM. But hey, I'm not asking for much, right?

  • I just wanted to update this thread before marking it as solved. I recently installed Reaper, and having a nice, up to date DAW has solved many problems. Now Vienna Special Edition loads quite fast, in fact only my Play synths are loading slowly at this point. My problems were not at all the fault of this software, they were either my own lack of knowledge or an old, outdated DAW. I'm getting reacquainted with these wonderful instruments again as I learn how to do things more correctly with a new DAW. Thanks to all for having patience with me.
