  • How to midi-transpose a complete preset/instrument?

    Hi all,

for layering I need to transpose a set of complete instruments. They shall sound exactly the same but played from another octave on the keyboard.

    How do I do this?

  • I'm not exactly sure I understand your question but I don't think you can transpose an entire octave.  However you can transpose a major 2nd and then pitch bend it back.

Unless there's something you can do with your sequencer.

    Thanks for your answer!

I'm looking just for simple transposing: i.e. the flutes C1 is on the keyboard C1 too. Now I want the same C1 of the flute triggered by the C2 on my keyboard. I know I could do this in my DAW but I want to stack some instruments of different manufactures (i.e. VSL & Spitfire) in VEPro. Sometimes the octave range just doesn't match (in my case in double basses and in string harmonics). So I just need to transpose the whole instrument one octave up or down (without going into every matrix cell and doing endless edits). But how?

  • Hi Torsten,

I´m afraid the best option is to transpose in your sequencer. You can also edit every single slot in VI PRO (Advanced View => Edit => Octave Transposition), but I agree that the effort is not worth the effect if you have to go through every single articulation.

  • Hi Paul,

    thanks for the answer!

Sequencer transpose is not an option for two stacked sounds as this transposes both of them.

Ok, transpose is on the wishlist for VIPro! And in VEPro too: would be cool if midi transpose per channel or instrument would be implemented.

To my luck I meanwhile found the tranpose button on the Spitfire instruments GUI :-)

If you want some instruments transposed during playback of your sequence, just make a copy of the track, assign it to the midi instrument you want to transpose, and then transpose the new track.

If you want to be able to play transposed & non transposed instruments at the same time from your keyboard, see if in your DAW you can assign your keyboard to multiple outputs (tracks) and be able to assign a midi effect to some of the tracks that will transpose the output.

Thanks... yeah, I thought about all that possibilities too. I'm just experimenting with layering dry (VSL) and wet/roomy libraries of other developers. I want to have them playing like one instrument, so I put them on the same Midi channel inside Vienna Ensemble Pro. When I play them from the keyboard they have to match range and octave. As I use 18 string tracks anyway I want to avoid adding multiple tracks in the DAW for each stacked instrument. There is time for configuration but when it's done I want a fast and useable template. And to be honest: I don't thing it's too much to ask for a little transpose knob. VIPro is such a perfect sample player! The best out there for my taste. I believe they just didn't think about this "stack thing" outside the VSL universe. If so they would already have a solution. So it's just a little user wish. Maybe there are some more users with the same needs and implementing a transpose knob would be worth the efford. At least I hope so. Sorry for that long monolog 😊

  • One solution you could use, while a bit "overkill" for your simple purpose, is Plogue's bidule.

Me, for example, I use it to have one track triggering my 16 violins (doubled via the pitch bend trick) inside cubase (cubase can't send datas to more that 5 midi channel at a time...)

It takes some time to understand how it works, but once you get it, it's really powerful (in my example, I transpose but filter the KS so that I can still control all my violins with the same keyswitches)

Cool idea... I never thought about bidule... might be a solution!
