  • Using VEP with Finale

Is the dump file in the Notation section the only Finale related help on this site? I was hoping to find something like sound sets or some data files that help Finale know the pitches of percussion instruments and other things.

What do we have? Please let there be something good.

Its bad enough that Finale doesn't have ReWire support (although I think that's coming), but it's a pain to get it to work well with Digital Performer or VEP. I need Finale to sync with DP, while VEP is slaved to Finale or DP. That would be a dream come true. The owner of Finale, on his blog, asked users what they wanted to see in the next version of Final and a lot of people said ReWire. I shouted ReWire. He took notice.

Notion is not the answer. Sibelius is obviously good. But it has a very weird tendency to feel "rubbery" I know that makes no sense. I hate the ribbon (turned off), the keyboard is ok, but I don't know. I went back to Finale after many many years and I'm gonna give it a serious go.

So, sorry for that non related story but now it's frustrating to see all of the Sibelius Sound Set files, but nothing for Finale. Are there any Finale GURUs that would be kind enough to have a conversation with me. I would be forever in your debt.

  • VSL provides HP Presferences for the Special Edition libraries only, though you can certainly create your own.

  • Hello Steve!

The Finale Human Playback system is not as flexible as the Sibelius sound set system. Most articulations of our single instruments and instrument collections couldn't be used even if we had dedicated Human Playback Preferences for them. With the keyswitch dump file that you have mentioned it's possible to change to every articulation manually by inserting a keyswitch and/or a Control Change command.

    Best regards,
    Andi

  • Best to use a combinations of the two. The HP preference rules can perfrom 2 actions (i.e. x and y control). With the dump file you need to nsert 2 articulations each time for the x and y axis.

You might find posting to the Finale/VSL Users Group to be helpful. It's not terribly active but folks will wake up when a request like this is posted.

  • Oh, you know, just trying to stay busy. And to keep people from switching to Sibelius. LOL P.S. - I concur with Bill that, once you venture outside of the Special Edition realm, combining staff expressions containing the keyswitch dumps with Human Playback is the way to go. I have the euphonium (which DESPERATELY needs some vibrato), flugelhorn, Eb clarinet, and contrabass clarinet download instruments and have had success playing all of them with Finale using this combo method. You need to create a customized HP Preferences file for non-Special Edition instruments but that only needs to be done once and the results are pretty robust, especially in tandem with the keyswitch dumps.
