Hi there Herb,

OK, I am ordering GS 3.04 today. What do you mean by 'fixed version' for us PE users. I think I purchased PE around NOV 03. Any way to tell me I am OK.

Rob
what would you attempt to do if you knew you could not fail?

1) Do these files replace the Perf. Tool for these libraries?

2) I just downloaded the ch. strings and it seems to contain the same files twice, just organised into different folders.

???

Thanks,

Alan

Hi Jay - thanks for your work!

Is there any percussion files underway - offcial or otherwise? I would love to have those. There are SO many different Perc files that it would be great to have them bundled into large instruments.

Also I think i'm having a problem with the HO_Perf_leg - saying something about some files not matching. I might have done something wrong so ill double check it... just wondering if anyone else had experienced it

Alan--
1) The performance tool is still necessary.
2) You are correct about the duplicate files. Not sure how that happened, but you can use either set. I believe they are identical. (Herb can you delete one of the sets or do you want me to upload a new zip file??)

Christian-- The only new programing was for the timpani (and only a few new patches). You can't combine different gigs using simply an art file. However, you can "merge" different instruments together using the gigaeditor. If you make a list of specfic things you'd like to have I'll let you know how it can be done. And if it's simple I'll be happy to do it for you. [Wink]

Which version of the HO_Perf_leg did you have a problem with--Pro Edition? Make sure you're not trying to use Pro Edition art files on a First Edition gig. Is this the only file that gave you errors? Please continue to report possible bugs and I'll try to fix them as quickly as possible.

Also please report which new patches you find useful and which you don't. And also feel free to propose patches that's you'd like to see in the future (I have my own list which I'll share in the days to come).

Best,
Jay

For those who don't yet have the pleasure of owning the listed VSL products, can we get additional information on what additional functionality the .art files offer? For instance, I am sitting on the fence concerning Horizon Chamber Strings -- but have GS3, so some additional detail on the new .art files might help me make a more informed purchase.

I would imagine that the increased dimensions available in GS3 have been utilized for more velocity layers, etc., but what other goodies can we expect?

Regards,

David

I love you Jay! Wink

Regarding what else I would like to see... well. I would love to see long notes and dynamic all instruments... So for each instrument in my sequencer it would be something like this:

Violins Perf
Violins Short
Violins Long
Violins Dynamic

I think something like that has been done for the horizon series?

That is if it isent possible to throw short, long and dynamics together into one.

As for percussion - well was thinking something like a large instument with timpani strikes, timpani rolls, and crecendos and dimenuendos... Basicaly have as many articulations in one instrument as possible, keeping down the amount of tracks needed in my sequencer per instrument.

Anyway, I really appreciate your work - keep it up! Smile

Oh - And personaly I would prefere as many different aricualtions in one instrument as possible, rather than variations of the same note... what I mean is that I would rather have an instrument with all the dynamics, including the specials, rather than one instrument with all crecendos 1+2+3... than rather have an instrument with the diff cres, dim lengths.... you know what I mean?

David,
The new patches mostly combine dynamic layers (via modwheel crossfade or velocity switch) in the performance instruments. They also create larger "all" patches. And a few other goodies too like the new Sus-Blend patches which allow you to crossfade the legato instruments to a longer sustain note with the modwheel.. Below is a list of the new patches for the Chamber Violins only. The Violas, Cellos and Basses have basically the same new patches as the Violins.

Christian,

Because of the large scale of the Pro Edition, Herb was merciful enough to let me concentrate on the Performance Patches (and short "all" patches) since these added functionality that was difficult to achieve any other way.

However, as you mentioned, the Horizon libraries do have new larger combination "all" patches for nearly every articulation category.

And if you dig deep into the Pro Edition you'll discover that many of the instruments already have "all" patches that combine many of the articulations in a gig file.

For the next art file release, I'll try to make sure that there's a complete "all" patch for each gig file.

Combining instruments from different gig files is a tiny bit more complicated for the end user, requiring the merging of different instruments and then the application of an art file. It's an extra step or two. And I not sure Herb wants to put his users through that. Perhaps Herb is planning to do some of this merging of instruments for us in the upcoming Symphonic Cube (this is just wishful speculation on my part).

Best,
Jay

hehe - yup, I understand completely.

I tried load up the Epic Horns all patch to remove the alternate notes, but I had to admit that I had no clue what I was doing.

Its clear to me now that I really need to learn the editor - I think it would greatly enhance my usage of Gigaliberaries in general.

As for the Pro Ed containing All patches - yup - it sure does. But they are still limited by 2.5. For instance I would love a patch where the special dynamics and regular dynamics were combined. Now they are like spec_dyn_all and cre_all etc...

Now... where do I start learning the editor? any online stuff?

Thanks Smile

Jay - The HO_Leg definately has some error - saying something about the file its saved from is different. Then it shows like 10 files that dont match and say there are 28 more...

I beleive I also got an error like that with the Contra Tuba... error in file "KTU_na_p.A2"

PS: I simply love that teh French Oboe and Epic Horns now have all patches. I really missed those!

I really look forward to hearing the blending of velocities for the legato patches, but so far I cant program my keyboard for modulation Big Smile

Christian-- I assume you're using the Pro Edition art files on Pro edition gigs, right? When did you purchase your Pro Edition? I'll double check the Ho-Leg and Contra Tuba. Herb-- can you check these too?

Christian-- you can program the modwheel directly in your sequencer, that's how I do it anyway.

Thanks,
Jay

For all those who don't know how to use the art files. Here's all you have to do:

1) Start the Gigastudio Instrument Editor.

2) File--Open... "VSL_instrument-of-your-choice".gig

3) File--Load articulation file... "VSL_instrument-of-your-choice_v3a".art

4) File--Save

That's it. Not so scary is it??

Best,
Jay
