  • VERY NEW USER... help would be much appreciated.

    Hi ALL,

I am going to be honest and state that although I have cubase and quite a lot of Vienna Symphonic Libraries I really don't have a clue.

The most immediate question is, I noticed at when I create an instance of a VEP 64 server... I can create one instance as Woodwinds, another as Brass and another as Strings and fill these instances with the corresponding VIPs .

    However, my question is.

Is it possible to have all the instances if to run through one instance of Mir Pro so I can visualise the orchestra in one room, rather than 3 instances?

I don't want sympathy...I have autism so I learn through visualisation easier, so if this is possible could someone point me to a video (or create one) of how this is achieved. Likewise, it would be very helpful if it were in Cubase.

There is a LOT I don't know, so if answers are given I might need a little more clarification than I (would like to ask for) or others may want to give.

    Kindest regards.

    P.S I'm using Windows 10 Pro

P.P.S This is my first ever post.

  • Welcome Reactor.UK,

thanks for your first message here - we hope that you like the place enough to become a regular. :-)

MIR is a somewhat peculiar product (... I think I'm allowed to write that as I came up with the idea ;-) ...) which offers a unique approach to spatialisation and reverb. The underlying concept implies that it should be used as mixing front end for (virtual) orchestration. Of course this means the originally MIR had to be used as single final instance for all involved signal sources.

With the advent of MIR Pro, this concept got diluted a bit, as you can now have several instances opened side-by-side. As a matter of fact there is no way at the moment to make different instances of VE Pro appear within _one_ Venue View of MIR Pro. Each frame of VE Pro is its own hermetic little universe.

A possible work-around could be to use MIR Pro as VST-plug-in inside Cubase (instead of its more convenient form as an integrated part of VE Pro). This would mean that you would have to route all signals from VE Pro to Cubase individually (instead of using VE Pro as submixer) and to instantiate MIR Pro in these channels. That way you could see all your instruments in one single MIR Pro-window.

... it's up to you to decide which approach fits your needs more!

    Kind regards,

  • Welcome Reactor, Hi Dietz,

Dietz, what about using MIR Pro as a VST/AU Plugin inside VEP (wich imply that you enable it in the preferences).

This way, there's no need for routing every single instruments to different outputs.

Is it something you don't recommend for any reason? Any drawback? I 've tried that sometimes and it seems to work well.

And btw I like your statement "at the moment...";)

    Thanks

  • Since one can run multiple ports each 16 channels though one VE Pro, you can create a huge orchestra in one MIR space and see everything on the stage.

When I hear Dietz say about MIR "I came up with the idea..." that is mind-boggling.  It is such a brilliant piece of software!  To me it is the best way to play and mix orchestral samples ever and the whole design is so useful from a musical as well as pure sound standpoint.

  • Dear ALL,

Many thanks for your kind responses.

I've managed to say a metaframe with one instance called "VEP Woodwind).

Currently within Cubase I've set the 'Input setting' to 'Vienna Instruments Midi' and the 'Output setting' to 'VEP Woodwind - MIDI in 1 for ALL the Woodwind (Flute 1,2,3,4 / Oboe 1,2,3,4 / Cor Anglais / Clarinet Bb 1,2,3 / Bass Clarinet Bb / Basson 1,2,3) all respectively assigned to channels 1-16. Sadly don't have room for the Contrabasson.

The issue is although I have another instance of VEP named 'VEP Strings' I don't know why I can't get any sound either out of it, and definately not whilst in Cubase.

I've attached a screenshot of the VEP Woodwind.

I am really sorry this is the only way I have managed to get sound from VSL to Cubase and I'm sure I'm doing it completely wrong. I've yet even understand how to change articulations within Cubase (well, even understanding the Matrix etc)

As I say, I'm sure I'm doing it all wrong... I wouldn't mind if I could create another instance of VEP and route that to Cubase so I can work on stage positioning, dynamics, tempo etc, but at the moment, I'm more focused on why the Woodwinds work, but can't figure out what I need to set in VEP Strings and in Cubase for the Strings to sound.

If anyone can share a screenshot or tell me what settings I need to use for each VEP instance and that of in Cubase that would be helpful.

There are I guess easier ways but I doubt I'll understand the terminology and it won't make sense to me.

    Kindest regards, Reactor

PS: How do I attach my screenshot?

If you run out of MIDI Channels, you just use another "MIDI Port" which will give you another 16, until you have addressed all the instruments you want to use in your project.

Assuming that you have opened "VEP Strings" as new, additional VST Instrument in Cubase's Instrument Rack, you should see the Output Channels of this instance of VE Pro in Cubase's mixer. All audio signals of this instance of VE Pro will arrive here.

    ... does this help?

  • Dietz,

I really appreciate your willingness to help. I have taken a screenshot of Cubase. I am not sure if this is what you're asking.

May I ask, so I can continue to add more than 16 instruments in 1 instance of VEP if I choose 'VEP Woodwind - MIDI in 2?

As you can see I'm working on Mahler (lots of instruments needed) am I'm on a single PC (no slaves) though I think my PC is pretty powerful.

I'm hoping for stage one to have a metaframe saved so I have all instruments loaded (on however many VEP's are needed). Then I need to learn how to use the articulations and the matrix thing. Velocity and Tempo won't be an issue I hope, as Cubase has made a mess of the score, and I'll manually address each instrument to set velocities ppp = 15 or whatever, at first, the draw in the dymanic expression.

I don't think I want the halionsonic SE there, but don't know how to remove it.

    Kindest regards, Reactor
