  • Actual 2016 Best HW system for VSL & MIR ?

    Hi,

I am planning (after 10 or so years) to upgrade my SE to a Symphonic Cube and MiR24.
My Lenovo Laptop I7 8 cores and 16 GB RAM, 256 SSD and Fireface USB will probably not be the best machine for that purpose.
It has to be Windows, so what is the best actual brand/machine and sizing I could go for in Germany?

Another Question: I have a spare server with WIndows 2008, 1TB SSD Disk and 32 GB RAM. Would Mir24 and VEPro 5 do the trick here and run on this additional machine?

Thanks for your tips in advance

Too old for Rock n Roll. Too young for 9th symphonies. Wagner Lover, IRCAM Alumni. Double Bass player starting in low Es. I am where noise is music.
  • Hi Holgmeister,

personally I would aim for a tailor-made machine for that purpose. There is a handful of highly specialized companies which will assemble specific DAW systems for you. At first sight they might look more expensive than off-the-shelf machines, but in the end it pays off.

Here you find some of them: -> https://www.vsl.co.at/en/Where_to_Buy/Certified_Workstations

Assuming that your "spare server" is up-to-date OS- and driver-wise (and assuming that the CPU is fast enough), it should be able to run MIR PRO 24 quite happily, though.

    Kind regards,

  • I too am looking at getting a new PC rig this year as well. MAC sees to be out of the game. Maybe they will announce a new system this year, but the silence is annoying.

I have been considering ADKProAudio, here in the US. They advertise a VSL build.

I am looking to run just one beefy computer. I have VEPro5, but I kinda like just a single box solution, if possible.

I upgraded my current system to Windows 10 and added a new Dell UP3216Q 4K monitor. WIndows 10 has been rock solid and eveything I have works with it. The new monitor is great, although I wish the VI Pro interface was scaleable.

    Anyone bought from ADK?

If one were to buy an off the shelf HP or Dell workstation/server, what would you guys recommend?

I am looking at about a $10k budget. Dual Zeon is my plan. Probably dual v3 10 core processors with the higher 3.10 clock speed.

    Thanks for your thoughts...

  • Although the computers I use are now relatively old, they were purchased from ADK.  I was pleased with their customer service and found them to be most helpful in fixing a problem when a motherboard subsequently failed.

It has been a few years though.
