  • VSL Orch. Strings Mutes Legato Question.

    Hello all.

              I have been using the mutes available in this library and have been unpleasantly surprised with the "sliding" legato that the Vlns. Vlas & Cellos seem to have. There are two patches available : the Legato and Slur Legato and I honestly cannot tell the difference as both seem to have a very pronounced "slur" that makes them near unplayable in certain contexts. 

    Is this normal or is there a bug in my instrument? It's not like VSL at all.

    Any help is appreciated.


  • Hello Simon, 

    You can always shorten the legato transitions in VI PRO, if you like. 

    Go to Advanced View => select the legato slot => "Advanced" Tab, and adjust the 3 Start Offset controllers as you like.

    In the manual I read, that the three offset controllers ('start offset mode', 'start offset', and 'start offset attack') effects the begin of a sample and not the transition. Do I miss here something?

    You are right. You wanted shorter transitions, so that would be one way to do it, simply cut the beginning of the transition sample. 

    Another way, actually more elegant, is to use the Stretch Option in VE PRO, speeding up only the transition part (first 20-30 ms of the sample). 

    I´d say: Give it a try and see what you like best.

  • Okay, so do I understand it right, that a transition sample consists of the transition plus the tone, that follows.
    Until now I thought that a legato melody is made by: a note sample - transition sample - note sample - transition sample and so on. Nice to get a better understanding how it works. And with  transition sample I mean in the example just the transition between the notes.

    Hello again,

    Actually the transition is part of each target note.

    So you play a note and as soon as you play another note, the recorded transition note INCLUDING the target note is being triggered.

    Wish list: It would be great to have some visual representation of the sample as we stretch it or adjust the start offset etc. I find it difficult when I have to choose a good start offest or by how much to stretch the sample, so I end up doing very little of it... In other words, what is the rule of thumb, of when to stretch, and when to change a start offset...

    Each Performance Legato Patch consists of 600-1000 samples. Which one would you like to see?

    I´d say, trust your ears when it comes to stretching, we have set the boundaries in a way that doesn´t really let you harm the samples.  And you´ll definitely hear when a vibrato becomes unnatural.

    Wow! I guess my issue is that I do not trust my ears in these minor nuances... For example, something may sound fine to my ears, but then another more experienced musician will come in and say that it does not sound good.

    I would love to know real world examples of when musicians have used stretching/changing offset successfully.
