  • EQ or FILTERS-what's the diffaerence?

    RUNNING: WIN 7, CUBASE 8.5, KONTAKT 5, VEP PRO,RME 400, AKAI MPK88, 5 2TB 7500 DRIVES, 64 GB

    Eq or Filters

    Used for :

    1.darkening or brightening instrument timbre?

    2.automating timbral variances when sequencing?

I know that they are both used for the above, I have experimented with them myself, but as filters are beginning to interest me as an alternative tool to eq, I'd like to see if anyone would like to chime in with their opinions on whether one is the better tool for the above, or, in the real run of things are there really no major advantages in one over the other?

    Thanks!

  • In the past, I've only used filters for tamping down blaring brass instruments.  The old Vienna player had a filter fader for that particular purpose among other things.  Now, I'm just more experienced with using vel X fade and expression to keep brass at a respectable level.  I use eq for sculpting sounds exclusively now.

Of course this only applies to orchestral instruments.  Synths?  Well that's another story probably for another forum.
