  • Brass I (full) or Dimension Brass I

Hi VSL community, I have a dilemma over selecting either Brass I (standard and full) or Dimension Brass I. My issue is that I very much like the idea of using the brass Choir both as an Ensemble of varying sizes and as part of bigger symphonic arrangements. Additionally, given budget is an issue I guess I am trying to get as much longevity out of a single library as possible. This includes learning the skills on arranging for a brass section. To you more experienced VSL users whom have had experience with these libraries, what are your thoughts and experiences - particularly with DM brass? Any thoughts or guidance would be greatfully received. Kind Regards, Lee Ps I own VE Pro and MIR Pro 24 (with roompacks)

  • I don't own Dimension Brass, so I cannot answer your question directly.

But, have you considered your current setup in making your decision?  WIth MIR 24, you can only use 24 instruments at once.  If you get Dimentsion Brass, potentially, most of your 24 MIR channels will be used just for Dimension Brass.  It would seem to me that to make full use of Dimension Brass you would need to consider upgrading to the full MIR Pro, to get around the number of instruments limitation that exists in MIR 24.

Just a thought, as you consider making your decision.

  • Noldar12 brings up an excellent point.

But really the best thing to do is request a demo license for both products and see which one works better for you and your set up.

    Hi,

Unfortunately we cannot provide demo downloads for our sample library products...

But you can check out the sounds with Audition Credit, if you like.

I´d always judge my next purchase by how it sounds in existing demos:

    Brass I
    Dimension Brass I

    Best,

    Paul

    My apologies Lee😳

I was under the impression that you could request demo licenses for every product in the VSL arsenal.  Obviously I was mistaken.

But Paul, I seem to remember buying a standard library or libraries some years ago and every time I started the Vienna player a message would come up saying that I had so many starts left for the demo of the extended versions of those libraries😕

Was this a practice that VSL discontinued?

But then again, I have been getting a bit senile in my old age.  The other day my TV wouldn't turn on and it took me nearly five minutes of fiddling around with the connections before I realized that I had confused a pocket calculator for the remote😛

I SWEAR they look exactly alike!!!

    Haha, great story ðŸ˜Š

Actually, we can always provide you with a demo license for the EXTENDED Library of on of our big library products you already have registered, as you are always download all the sample content, so that still works!

  • The VSL Brass library is the best sampled brass library on the planet, and so your main option would be that.  You can use various tricks to expand the individual instruments for second players, etc.  If one looks at the detail of articulations in C trumpet, tenor trombone, solo horn, ensemble trombones, etc. - there is nothing that matches these sounds.  They are fabulous.  However, I have to add that Dimension brass allows free changes of any ensemble size without worrying about phasing, or doubling with transposition, etc. (though these can be dealt with).  But it does not have the detail of the solo instruments.

Ideally, one should get both.  This gives many more options for combinations based upon the needs of the music.

  • Hi All,

Thank you for your responses; certainly allot to consider.

William: A big vote of confidence with the VSL Brass I - thanks for your input. I must say - although the learning curve with Vienna products has been steep over the past few months, the results do sound fantastic.

    Kind Regards,

    Lee

I own the special editions woodwinds volume 1 sample library. Would I be able to request a demo license for SE brass vol 1 because they're both part of the special editions libraries?

  • Hi paranini,

I´m afraid that only works for our bigger collections, not for the Special Editions.
