  • Dimensions Brass accents not velocity sensitive

Some of the accents in the Dimensions Brass instruments are not velocity sensitive. For example, in my Sibelius score (using the Vienna soundset for Sibelius), the horns always play the accented notes exactly the same loud volume, even when they are marked pianissimo (which sends a much lower MIDI velocity). Is there a way to have that same articulation played quietly, specifically on the basis of MIDI velocity? I'd really prefer not to wire a separate keyswitch to adjust the volume (if that is even possible). Thanks for your help.

  • Hello Byron!

Accents in Sibelius for Dimension Brass work fine here. Please note that Sibelius adjusts the dynamics for accents in percent. 120% of velocity 20 (pianissimo) is only 22. So the lower the dynamic level, the lower the effect of the accent. I'm sorry to say that there's not much we could do about it. You could adjust the dynamic of accents to 200% in the Sibelius playback dictionary, but that would raise a mp with accent to fff.

  • Hi Andi

Thanks for your reply, though I'm having the opposite problem. All the accents are very loud, and the volume does not vary with the dynamics in Sibelius. So the accents are "working" in that sense--they certainly do sound accented--but the accented notes are disrupting the music because the volume is too high. Is there a way to increase the sensitivity of the accented notes in the Vienna Instruments interface, so that it only plays a loud accent for a very high velocity?

Also, I notice that the accents are played from a different stage position than the non-accented notes. It has a very confusing effect, as if the brass players are leaping around the stage during the performance. This is not a problem with Dimensions Strings--everything seems to work perfectly in that library. Is there any way to make a Dimensions Brass instrument take a single position on the stage, instead of moving to a different chair for each articulation?

  • Hi Byron!

The sensitivity of accents can be set in the Sibelius playback dictionary under Articulations/Accent. The Vienna Instruments simply get velocity and CC11 values from Sibelius for dynamics. So there's nothing to interpret or set up here as far as accents are concerned.

If the player changes when you add an accent, there's probably an error somewhere in your set up. Please check the Troubleshooting chapter of the "Optimizing Sibelius Playback" manual. Maybe you can find a solution there.

  • Thanks Andi, my configuration was the problem--Sibelius was switching to the "Sibelius Player" for the accented notes...! I set a preference in the playback configuration to always send upper brass to Vienna, and now it sounds great.

It would be nice if I could use the low brass from Dimensions (bass trombone and tuba), but the missing ranges make it impossible for me. Is there a reason those instruments don't have complete ranges like the others? I realize they are not intended for solos, but it's quite common in orchestral parts for tuba to go well into the octave below middle C. It really seems like a severe limitation that the notes are completely missing, and it's not at all the same to have a bass trombone "take over" in that range. For now I'm using Sibelius Player's tuba, but it's a very compressed sound--not so effective for big dramatic moments. Perhaps I'll get the Vienna solo tuba at some point.

  • Hi Byron!

The "Low Brass" section of the Dimension Brass I collection was only ment to be a low brass section. I'm sorry to say that we didn't record the high register for this section. The full register of the Tuba and Bass trombone are included in the Tuba and Bass trombone single instruments and the instrument collections Brass I and II.

At this point I want to mention that you can extend the range up to a major third with the Vienna Instruments Pro player (Advanced > Show/Hide Keyboard Range). Maybe this helps for some of your parts.
