  • VEP6 2 seconds playback delay (Mac)

VEP6 looks awesome, lots of great new features.

However, one big issue I am having is forcing me to go back to VEP5 (I hope that is possible).

Whenever I start playback (this is in Logic X), it takes 1-2 seconds before playback starts. This is obviously useless, and I never had this problem with VEP in the past.

Any clues (that don't include network, soundcard etc., setting in Logic etc that have nothing to do with this, since it all worked perfectly well until installing VEP6 :)).

  • Hi Simon,

We´re investigating, this was never an issue while beta-testing.

Rolling back, always UNINSTALL first (especially on OS X, use the included UNINSTALLER).

  • Exacty the same problem here. When pressing play (in Logic x), Mine can be as bad as 10 seconds. VE Pro 5 didn't behave like that at all.

When I press stop twice on Logic (i.e. return to zero) then press play. each instance displays 'Engine Stopped' for a split second then 'Engine started'. If somehow Logic is stopping the engine on all VE Pro instances and then re-starting them then it's not suprising of such a massive delays. At first I thought this was an autosave setting but doesn't seem to be. I've looket at the "start/stop engine' and 'start / stop transport' under the Transport menu but doesn't seem to make a difference. I also thought it could be a MIDI reset message in Logic (upon stop) but only have mod, sustain and pitch bend reset messages active.

Sadly this is completely unusable for me,  hoping VE Pro 5 will still install OK

Thanks Paul, appreciate it. Hope you find the culprit.

  • Hi Paul,

I've rolled back succesfully to V5 but now my current project doesn't load anything within VE Pro. Is there a way around this?

    Thanks,

    Richard

  • Seems like most of the reports of latency with playback so far that I've read seem to be with people working with Logic. Wonder if anyone has had these issues with any other DAWS so far. Just tried loading and instance in a blank Cubase 8 project and playback seemed to star immediately (of course the project was empty though and only 1 instance in VEPro 6 open). Haven't had a chance to try it with any actual projects as of yet. Will have to try it with Pro Tools later as well (Haven't used Logic for many years now).

  • Hello Richard,

That´s correct, VE PRO 6 projects will not open in VE PRO 5, I´m afraid.

  • I have this same problem and posted an earlier thread, but this thread is getting more tracktion so I'll reply here.

I tried to roll back but the installers don't show AU versions for VEP5 when I go to install, so I guess I'm stuck. Any idea why no AU version shows up in the 5 installer?

EDIT: A few minutes later the AU version seems to have appeared in Plugin Manager - very strange!

  • Hello Daniel,

AU is always the STANDARD installed file on Mac, so you cannot choose to not install it - and the default OS X Installer doesn´t display it for that reason.

    Sorry for the confusion.

When rolling back on OS X, PLEASE use the included UNINSTALLER that comes with VE PRO 6.

OS X is a bit tricky in this regard.

    Best,
    Paul

    Hello Simon ,

after updating to VEP6 ( using  Logic 10.2.4 / OS X 10.11.4 ) I had issues playing back big sessions  that worked well with VEP5 .

After experimenting with various tweaks I finally solved the issues with setting Logic's Audio Preferences  for "PROCESS BUFFER RANGE" to LARGE . Try it , ... hopefully it solves your issues , too.

    Best,

    Gerd

Sadly, a Large Process Buffer Range does nothing to help me.

On second try the I/O Buffer Size certainly did affect the issue:

    - 64 caused a delay that I had to force quit out of

    - 256 about 4-5 seconds

    - 512 was more like 4 seconds

This is so disappointing 😔 since it looks like a really nice upgrade!

  • Hello everbody,

Of course we are looking  into this as well as all other reported bugs, and I´m sure these issues will be sorted with the next update.

Please give us a little time to integrate and test all changes in this brand-new software, so that we can fulfill your expectations.

Thanks for your all your input and also for your understanding,
    Paul

  • Hey guys, new to VEP, my first contact with this program was when I bought 6 yesterday, I had this problem too. What seemed to fix it for me was changing my Logic thread count to 2, my buffer size to Large, and my VEP server to 4 threads. Lastly Multithreading in Logic X to Playback tracks only. Have a play around with these four settings and see if you have more luck! The lag is still there, but nowhere near as prominent. Around half a second to 1 second, with the 'Engine stopped/started' flickering in VEP.

I'm using a Mac Pro '13, 12-core, 64GB RAM. Logic seems to like only using 1 core whilst leaving VEP to handle the rest. (At least I think, I have no idea how or why this fixed it for me)

Thanks for such a great product, it's amazing how well optimized it is at hosting compared to Logic, it's exactly what I needed and the product works flawlessly for me despite this one small issue.

    Cheers,

    Jarrod

  • Not having that issue  here with Logic Pro X and VE Pro 6 on my WIndows 10 slave.
