I've been using Cubase 6.5 on my Mac for years. I've avoided upgrading because the enhancements haven't seemed relevant for my needs or worth the extra cost. I particularly like using the Expression Maps for midi input using my VSL instruments. Is there any advantage to upgrading to Cubase Pro 9? Has the Expression Mapping been improved at all since 6.5, or are there other features of Pro 9 that would be worth the €300 upgrade cost?

Thanks for any help.  - Jim

Hi Jim,

There are a lot of new things in since CB 6.5 that may interest you or annoy the hell out of you. I personally would never consider going back to 6.5 and think 9 is a great update. I'd suggest holding off for the trial which should be around in a month and checking it out for yourself as you'll need to dig deep and spend time with it to know if it works for you.

I'd strongly suggest doing a system wide backup prior in to installing it so you can be sure you can recover your computer to its prior state if something goes wrong! Installing V9 trial will not stop you using CB 6.5

Thanks Fuzzydude. Are you saying that Steinberg will start offering a trial period for Cubase Pro 9 starting in about a month? That will be great to explore it before I commit to buying. Thanks for your help.  - Jim

Hi Jim,

Personally, I went back from Nuendo 6.5 to 5.5 (which is equivalent to Cubase 7.5 and 6.5). In my opinion, the handful of great new features isn't worth the hassle which the newly designed mixer page gives me. I'm used to work with mouse and keyboard shortcuts a lot; the mixer of Cubase 7.x and later is constantly getting in my way, as it needs more attention and more mouse-clicks.

... I repeat: That's my personal opinion as a full-time audio engineer, not an offcial statement for VSL. I know quite a few people who are happy with the latest & greatest versions of Cubase and Nuendo. :-)

Kind regards,
