  • Vienna MIR PRO, SE1, Logic Pro X and Omnisphere 2

    Hi all!

I'm new to Vienna Symphonic Library and am interested in purchasing and starting with MIR PRO and SE1. I'm also considering purchasing a new MacBook Pro with which I plan to record my compositions. However, I wonder if its system would be strong enough to do so, as I also plan to work with Logic Pro X and Omnnisphere 2 as well. According to MIR PRO's 'System Requirements' page, the MacBook Pro, with its Mac Intel i7-Quad CPU, would be strong enough to only support small projects.

Would I be better off purchasing the Mac Pro 8-core, as suggested by Vienna, or would the mentioned MacBook Pro be good enough (to work with Logic Pro X and Omisphere 2 as well)? Thanks in advance!

    Arifin

  • Hi Arifin,

The new MacBook Pro is quite a powerful machine, but of course you will reach a limit at a certain point.

It depends on your plans (how many tracks, can you maybe bounce inbetween, how big do you want your template to be, how many voices are streamed at the same time).

All in all, you will get more performance and also hardware options out of the bigger computer.

Maybe someone can chime in here and tell us about their experience with the current MacBook Pro?

  • I'm using a mid 2015 fully loaded Macbook pro.  With two thunderbolt-connected drives, one of which is a 1T SSD, the other a 1T Lacie.

Here's what is in my current session:

    In Vienna Ensemble Pro 6:

    • Dimension Strings I (all)
    • SE1+ Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon
    • SE1+ Celeste
    • Spitfire Symphonic Brass in Kontakt (6 instruments)
    • Ivory II Steinway
    • Spitfire Felt Piano
    • Omnisphere 2 (2 patches going)
    • MIR Pro 24
    • Some Fabfilter plugins
    • Valhalla Shimmer plugin

And in Logic, I've got another Kontakt multichan with 3 Spitfire synthy things along with the movie.  There are three audio tracks, the movie dialog, temp music, and printed audio from a Access Virus TI.

Everything runs pretty well... not hearing dropped notes or anything.

Lastly, my secret weapon is a stack of scratch paper and a pencil where I sketch everything out before I start playing in notes.  It eats up no ram and no CPU.

  • I'm running a 15" MacBook Pro i5 with 16GB ram. I'm using a small set-up. Only 16 tracks but they all play simultaneously and no issues. Reverbs, compressors, etc. work just fine. I will say that on battery Power the UI can lag but plugged in there is plenty more room. With all the "plus" matrices added I still am only using 1/2 my RAM and 15% CPU. Interestingly enough, I found that running all the tracks in ensemble or just one-off 16 VI Pro instances made no difference in RAM or CPU usage.

  • Hi everyone,

Thanks a lot for taking the time, it is very much appreciated. It's been a while since I've been here, but I'm finally ready to give it a go! I have my new Macbook and will purchase the Vienna Key, Special Edition 1 and MIR Pro 24. About the latter, am I correct that the software itself has no room included? If not, then I suppose I have to at least order one of the room bundles... the only thing is, I don't know which one! All help is appreciated.

    Kind regards, Arifin

  • Hi Arifin,

Great to hear that you're ready!
You are right, MIR PRO does not come with a RoomPack included, you can pick the one that suits you best.

Here's what I would do: Purchase all products except the RoomPacks and then get a free demo license for all RoomPacks.

These demo licenses work for 30 days/30 starts. Once the 30 starts are used up, you can recharge them as often as you like by clicking "Maintenance" in the eLicenser Control Center (within 30 days).

  • Dear Paul,

Thanks for the tips! I ordered the Vienna Key, SE1 and MIR Pro 24, should be delivered one of these days. Can't wait to experiment!

For my first project, I'm thinking of recording a song with vocals and classical instruments. An example of this is Enya's May It Be. Is it possible to work with SE1 and MIR Pro 24 within Logic? Or is Ensemble Pro a must?

    Hi Arifin,

Yes, you can use both the Special Edition Vol 1 and MIR PRO in Logic, without Vienna Ensemble PRO.

I can see your order for MIR PRO 24, but couldn't find an order for SE....

Also, you will be missing a RoomPack, these are available separately.

I assume that your plan is to get demo licenses for all RoomPacks and see which ones you like best. You can get those demo licenses on the individual RoomPack product pages.

    Any specific questions: support@vsl.co.at

  • Hi Paul, I ordered the Vienna Key and SE Collection Vol. 1 at Thomann, should be arriving anytime soon. Not illegal ;) When both are in, I’ll download MIR Pro 24 and see which of the Room Packs suits me best. Can’t wait! Thanks for the help. Best, Dustin
