  • Sustained Notes - Solo Strings

    Hello

I'm sure this has been discussed but I can't quite get my head round something.  I'm using the solo string library to mock up a demo from a Sibelius midi file that I've imported into Logic. The music is very quiet with sustained notes but neither the perf legato or sustain patches hold their note for long enough and re-triggering the note isn't an option.  So I get lots of chords that end early.

However, if I play the notes on my keyboard they do hold the notes for their full value?  Why does the imported midi file not hold the notes but when I play it in using my keyboard the notes are held for longer...

I've experimented with cell x-fading etc but I'm not sure any of it really solves the problem.

    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Many Thanks

    James

  • Hello James!

Only the lowest velocity of the Solo Strings I collection is looped. You probably have triggered these samples while playing with your keyboard. By retriggering the note you would trigger a bow change repetition. That's exactly what a human player would do for a long note that he can't play with one bow.

    Best regards,
    Andi

  • Hi,

Quick add on: For best results when re-triggering a note, make sure that the gap between the notes is very small, or use the sustain pedal while you re-trigger.

  • At least in Logic, I've found that the only way to have a gap of the right lenght, is using the scissors in the Piano Roll editor. The Force Legato function leaves too wide a gap (at least with the default settings in both Logic and VI PRO), and trying to tie bowed segments by hand is time consuming and erratic.

Scissors seems to work great. The attached example is a solo violin long note, made of four segments.
