  • Help! No slave instances in VEPro 6

I am brand new to VEPro and need some help getting VEPro instances from my slave PC to appear in the sequencer's plugin on my master PC. I've been scouring the web and the user manuals for hours without finding a solution that works.

    Here's my setup:

    Master PC

    Running Windows 10 Pro, 64-bit

Gigabit LAN Connection via Cat5e to Slave PC (used soley for VEP):

    • Static IP = 10.0.0.1
    • Subnet Mask = 255.255.0.0
    • Default Gateway = Blank
    • DNS Serves = Blank

WIFI Connection (used for Internet and Remote Desktop of slave):

Auto-assigned from wireless router -- currently:

    •    IPv6 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 2600:1015:b003:ecd7:a1b6:4532:bf83:cf7f
    •    Temporary IPv6 Address. . . . . . : 2600:1015:b003:ecd7:69b0:58ad:32e2:3651
    •    Link-local IPv6 Address . . . . . : fe80::a1b6:4532:bf83:cf7f%9
    •    IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.9
    •    Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
    •    Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : fe80::82b:54ff:fece:8169%9      192.168.1.1

    Slave PC

    Running Windows 7 Pro, 64-bit

Gigabit LAN Connection via Cat5e to Master PC (used soley for VEP):

    • Static IP = 10.0.0.2
    • Subnet Mask = 255.255.0.0
    • Default Gateway = Blank
    • DNS Serves = Blank

WIFI Connection (used for Internet and Remote Desktop Control from Master PC):

Auto-assigned from wireless router -- currently:

    •    IPv6 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 2600:1015:b003:ecd7:8c00:1645:d5c9:643c
    •    Temporary IPv6 Address. . . . . . : 2600:1015:b003:ecd7:8d3b:8988:9a0e:3d2b
    •    Link-local IPv6 Address . . . . . : fe80::8c00:1645:d5c9:643c%13
    •    IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.3
    •    Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
    •    Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : fe80::82b:54ff:fece:8169%13      192.168.1.1

    Here's what I've tried:

    1. Added Inbound Rules for Windows Firewall per VEPro6 manual (on both machines)
    2. "Advertise on local network" is checked in VEPro Preferences (on both machines)
    3. Ping successful for static LAN IP's (on both machines)
    4. Running VEPro6 Server 64-bit on both machines before firing up DAW on master pc
    5. Insert plugin instance of Vienna Ensemble Pro (VSL) 32-out on track in DAW
    6. Click "Connect" in plugin window in DAW
    7. Only localhost Server Instance appears, no instances from slave pc
    8. Close DAW and VEPro on both machines
    9. Disabled WIFI on both machines then attempted #4 thru #6 again -- same results.
    10. Changed static IP on Master/Slave LAN to 192.168.1.101/192.168.1.102 -- same results.
    11. Changed Subnet Mask on Master/Slave LAN to 255.255.255.0 for both -- same results.

Apart from VEPro, I have verified the computers can talk with eachother each time via the successful pings and Remote Desktop Control using the LAN connection instead of the WIFI.

I just can't get the slave instance to show up in plugin window inside the DAW, only the local instance on the  master.

I've never used VEPro before, so I'm sure I've just made a rookie mistake and have overlooked something. Thanks in advance for any advice you can give!

    Cheers,

Just tried that., thank you. Same results....no slave instances on the master pc.

  • Hi,

    Any router involved?

Did you check that it doesn't have the IP 10.0.0.1 or 10.0.0.2?

I do have a router that is controlling the WIFI connections on each computer. I do not see that it is using (or even has used) those IP's.

There is no router or switch between the LAN connections of the master and slave.

  • Hi,

I was actually asking the wrong question with he 10.0.0.x network, sorry.

I'd try different IPv4 addresses for the 192.168.1.x network and check if leaving the default gateway makes any difference.

  • Your subnet mask should normally be set to 255.255.255.0

    You can try this :

Define "auto assign" and note down the result (DHCP)

Then put it to fix assign and key-ing what you have noted

After you must de-assign Wifi on the slave

The 192.168.1.x network IP's are automatically assigned by the WIFI Router. While it consistently assigns the same IP to the same device, it does not appear I can manually change the IP assignment from the router side of things.

When I attempt to assign static IP's on that WIFI network from within the adapter settings on each PC, I lose all connectivity on that wireless network.

I have also tried removing both PCs from the WIFI network completely (and disabling the WIFI adapters on each PC). That leaves the only network being the direct LAN connection between the two PCs. When I do this, I can ping the PCs with the 10.0.0.x addresses, but I still get nothing showing up in VEPro6.

Ok. I noted what was being auto-assigned to my PCs from the router, then manually set that information on each PC.  When doing this I had to leave the DNS server addresses blank.

Still no slave instances inVEPro6. Also when I did this, the PCs could still talk to each other over the WIFI network, but my router would not give either PC internet access, oddly enough.

Wasn't too sure what "de-assign WIFI on the slave" meant, so after I tried the above, I disabled the WIFI on the slave. No change in results.

  • if you disable WIFI everywhere and set your 2 x PC with DHCP, does it work creating a new song.

  • Update:

I still wasn't having any luck getting my slave instances to appear in my DAW plugin, so out of desperation -- and for some reason unknown to me -- I decided to type in the IP address for my slave into the "Server" field at the bottom of the plugin window as well as the name of the instance I had running on the slave.

    Voila! It connected!

Sort of. It didn't connect to the instance I had open on the slave, but it created a new instance instead.

So while it seems that my VEPro6 servers can indeed talk to eachother, I am not sure how to create an instance on the slave and then access that instance on the master via the DAW plugin.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks.

  • Hi,

There MUST be something blocking network communication there.

Do you have any additional "security software" installed, like, e.g., Little Snitch? These programs need to make exceptions for VE PRO.

Sorry if that has been asked before: Did you disconnect from the internet and deactivate your firewalls on both computers?

    Best,
    Paul

Firewalls disabled on both PCs. WIFI (only source of internet) disbled on both PCs.

I do have Webroot Security installed. Tried making exceptions for VE PRO, no luck. Completely disabled the program on both machines. Still no luck.

have been successful in manually connecting to the existing slave instances by typing them into the DAW plugin. They just don't show up on the list of server instances. At this point, while it is not extremely convenient to type these in manually, it's certainly functional which is more than it has been up to this point.

  • Hi,

Thanks for the update. Still, shouldn't be that way, and works for literally thousands of musicians.

Does anybody else have an idea what's happening here?

Would you like to post an overview of the existing network settings like you did in the opening post?

    Best,
    Paul

  • I am having the eaxct same problem as the OP, but my master machine is a Mac (10.9.5) and my slave is a Win 7 64Bit machine. If I type the IP & name of instance in directly I can connect, but the slave server does not show up in the list in the server plug-in on my master machine (using Pro Tools 11).

    Thanks,,

    Hi George,

What are your network settings on both computers? Which AV Software, Firewall Settings?

If you activated the Firewall on Windows, did you check the exceptions as described in the VE PRO 6 manual (first pages)?

    Best,
    Paul

  • Hi Paul, I tried disabeling the firewall on the slave, but there was no change. I can connect to the slave via the "go to server" menu in Mac OS as well. Instances on my lcal machine in Vepro show up just fine. There is some setting(s) I am unaware of that is preventing the instances on the slave to display on the master. I went through the settings per the manual, but am still not having any luck. Thanks, George

  • Hi George,

Can you please send me some screenshots of your network settings to support@vsl.co.at?

    Best,
    Paul

  • Bump

Has this been officially resolved? Having the exact same issue, and have taken all the steps. Master computer is a mac however, everything else is identical
