  • Trouble starting over

    Hi,

I had to get a new computer, and now I'm trying to add VSL instruments to my Sibelius scores, and I have obviously missed something basic in the setup. I'm using Windows 10 Pro x64, Sibelius 8.5.1, and Vienna Instruments Special Edition 5.2. I have successfully installed all the programs, including the VSL Sibelius sound sets.

When I try to create a new playback configuration in Sibelius, I successfully invoke an instance of Vienna Ensemble 5.4.15962 (64-bit), and it is connected. But when I choose an instrument from the SE 5.2 list, it shows now playable range (white keys) on the virtual keyboard, and there is no sound. I go back to Sibelius and correctly match the manual sound sets to my new selection from the Vienna SE, but when I test, there is also no sound.

I have gone over the VE_Optimizing_Sibelius_Playback_v3.4.pdf multiple times, but I can't find an answer there, and I can't find the instructional video you used to have.

I must be missing a basic step. Any help is appreciated.

    Ken

  • Hello Ken!

If the keys of the virtual keyboard stay grey, the content is probably not loaded. Please make sure that the library content is indeed installed and the folders with the content (.dat files) are assigned in the Directory Manager. The eLicenser key with your licenses must be attached as well.

    I hope this helps.

    Best regards,
    Andi

  • Andi,

That's exactly the problem - the content is not loading when I click on "Load". But the library content is installed and the folders with the content (.dat files) are assigned in the Directory Manager. The eLicenser key with the  license is also attached.

The folders in the Directory Manager are red, but when I go to them in File Explorer they are black. I have tried to un-check the "Read-only" status in the VSL folder properties, but "Read-only" remains checked. Could this be a permission problem?

  • Hello Ken!

If the folders are displayed in red in the Directory Manager, this means that the folders can't be found. I would remove all folders from the Direcotry Manager. Then drag the folders with the content (.dat files) from the Explorer onto the Directory Manager and rescan the folders. I hope this helps.

    Best regards,
    Andi

  • Hi Andi,

That fixed the loading problem--thanks! But now some of the instruments skip some notes. I'm sure I have discreet channels for each one, and in my sample piece I only have 5 instruments. Any ideas?

    Thanks,

    Ken

  • Hi Ken!

I'm glad that we were able to solve the problem.
To your new problem - without any further details this is hard to pinpoint.

    - Do you have the Learn/Optimize mode activated?
    - Do you have have notes outside the playing range in your score?
    - Do you have note repetitions in your piece where you have manipulated the note duration or the live start playback position with the Sibelius inspector?
    - If you can answer all these questions with no, there's maybe an error somewhere in your setup. In this case I would check the Troubleshooting chapter of the "Optimizing Sibelius Playback" manual.

    Best,
    Andi
