  • Mixing entirely within Vienna Ensemble (not pro) - possible?

I've got a routing/setup-related question: I use Vienna Ensemble (not pro) with Cubase - one instance of VE per orchestra section, and in each of them there is one effect channel for convolution reverb. Why? Because the VE instance is limited to 16 MIDI channels and I can't route from one instance to another (or can I?).

Consequences being: When I want to change something about the reverb, like pre-delay or EQ or whatever, I have to tweak 4 instances of reverb across 4 instances of VE. That's not very comfortable.

Where's the fault in my setup? Could I do it differently with VE (not pro)? Would it help to upgrade to VE pro?

I've tried mixing in Cubase prior to this setup, but CPU load was higher and - for some reason, don't ask me why - instruments were not as clearly positioned in the mix. That's why I want to go with VE only.

Any advice on this setup is appreciated. Thanks!

  • There are probably many here who will have a better solution, but I will toss out what came to my mind as I read your post. This is basically how my setup works now. I created send FX channels in my DAW and insert VE Audio Input plugin so I could run my send effects in VEP and not have them in my DAW template.

Maybe create a FX send bus on each Instance, that returns to your DAW...instead of a CONVREV channel in each instance. Then route all of them back to a single effects channel send on your DAW that goes back to one instance on your VE that has the actual Reverb Effect channel. Then return to your DAW as a single output sharing one common reverb channel.

It would loop through your DAW twice, and that might have too much latency. I would think if the instance holding the actual reverb were a localhost, it might work quite well.

You can also just use the same concept and do the send from the VST audio channel that your instrument is returning to your DAW. Same idea, just a different tap point. This is how my setup is configured at this time. Works well.

  • Thanks, Synetos, for sharing your setup! I will certainly look into it!
