  • VE pro 6 With a Slave new machine, need your help !

    Hi Everybody,

I have one master PC right now (I7 3770K - 32Gb RAM) with my Mix Stuff & Cubase pro 8.5 running on Win 7 pro with a UCX RME for the audio system.

I would like to buy a new CPU and using it in Slave mode with VEP6. for orchestral samples.
I was looking for : The brain new socket 2099 and the I7 7820X - 128 Gb RAM.

    My questions is :

1 - Do i need a second sound card on the slave machine ?

2 - Do VEP6 support 128 Gb RAM on a huge orchestral template one one single slave machine ?

3- Is the network cable able to manage around 200 audio tracks, host by the slave machine with my 128Gb ram & send into my master mixing CPU ?

4 - What is AU/VST MIDI PORT LIMIT ? Is it one instance ? We can open illimited instance of VEP6 on this slave pc ? Right ?

Thanks you in advance for your answers.

If you have idea, don't hesitate. I have 3000 euros to build this slave machine for hosting & play my samples.

    Bruno.

    Hi Bruno,

Technical questions like this are in best hands with the hardware specialists we are working with.

Here are the answers to your questions:

1 - Do i need a second sound card on the slave machine ?

=> No, MIDI and Audio is sent via LAN, audio output is taken care of by your main computer (sequencer).

2 - Do VEP6 support 128 Gb RAM on a huge orchestral template one one single slave machine ?

=> Yes, the 64 bit version.

3- Is the network cable able to manage around 200 audio tracks, host by the slave machine with my 128Gb ram & send into my master mixing CPU ?

=> There is always a limit and it depends on the workload and latency as well, but in general, 200 tracks are easy.

As an example: One sample of audio is 4 bytes in size. So if the samplerate is 44100, for a single channel of audio, 44100*4 bytes is the size for one second of audio. 32 audio channels would thus mean 32*44100*4 = 5644800 bytes per second. So for 32 active audio outputs, VE Pro only needs up to 5-6 MB/s.

4 - What is AU/VST MIDI PORT LIMIT ? Is it one instance ? We can open illimited instance of VEP6 on this slave pc ? Right ?

=> AU is still limited to 1 Port, but AUv3 will hopefully work with VE PRO soon.

=> With VST3, you get up to 48 ports (PER INSTANCE), no limits to instances.

    Hope that helps.

    Best,
    Paul

  • Indeed, it helps a lot. Thanks.

Anyway, i have question on LAN system.

    > The LAN network is 100 MB/s right ? So i can run around 500 active audio output ?
I need a special router to connect Vep Server on slave machine?

Again, i need your advices. What do you think about my project ? To build a strong slave machine and mix (with plugin and MIR PRO on it) on my master machine with cubase.

Is the best idea to run 128 Gb of ram of Vienna sample on the slave machine and let the master Cpu carry the plugin, the mix & everything ?

Thank you in advance, i'm a little lost i admit.

  • Hello Bruno,

Yes, you have 125 MB/s with a GigaBit network.

You don't need a special router, you can also connect master and slave directly, if you like.

You can also do a lot of the mixing in VE PRO (FX, reverberation, busses), and the best solution is always the one that works best for you (and your specific setup), so there are many options.

  • Paul,

    On your exemple

As an example: One sample of audio is 4 bytes in size. So if the samplerate is 44100, for a single channel of audio, 44100*4 bytes is the size for one second of audio. 32 audio channels would thus mean 32*44100*4 = 5644800 bytes per second. So for 32 active audio outputs, VE Pro only needs up to 5-6 MB/s.

    It's mono track right ?
Cause in Kontakt 5, it's all time stereo channels.

    So it's 16 active stereo audio outputs, 5-6 MBytes/S ?

  • Hello Bruno,

    Yes.
