  • "Ancient Song " Trio for Flute, Horn and Harp

this full Soundcloud track was removed because I am trying to sell it here -

    Ancient Song

Yes, I know it is outrageous NOT giving out full pieces of music for free. I apologize.

  • Fabulous. You created a very compelling piece with just three instruments. I would not have guessed that horn, flute and harp would make a good combination, but it really works well.

Thanks Paul - I did another trio for this combo -

    Song of the Forest

That one is an arrangement of the previous version which was for a somewhat impractical combination of four recorders and harp.

Please forgive my late reply. I got caught up in other things. Really, really beautiful. Awesome midi performance and sound, awesome composition. I love the sound you have achieved with this.

  • thanks Paul.  I removed the first track from soundcloud because I'm trying to sell it !   Someone PAYS for sheet music and then PLAYS the music.   What a concept.  In the middle of the night I sat bolt upright with the truly weird idea that people might do this.  So I have had three sales of the sheet music.   I have now earned enough for two meals.  This fits in well with my diet plan.

  • Ha! Sadly classical music is not as appreciated as it was when you and I were young. I know that you are an accomplished horn player in addition to being an accomplished composer. Perhaps you could write your own horn concerto and do personal appearences playing your own concerto? That would be such a blast!

3 copies of the sheet music?  That's quite a success!

Seriously, I know how frustrating it is, as I have experienced much the same response through my many efforts to "follow the money" and find ways to monetize my work.  At various points, I had Chinese, Australian, and several European accordionists contact me asking if I could give them scores to some of my original compositions for accordion and clarinet.  When I suggested making them available for sale through my site, not a single one of them was willing to give me a penny.  At least you're smart enough to try to sell them through established sheet music sites, as doing it simply through your own personal site is a recipe for disaster in my experience.

Keep at it.  You write beautiful music, that's worth far more than the sales reflect.

    Hi William,

I've listened to both the pieces ( the 1st too short to have an opinion) and I really like them. The Song of the forest is so beautiful as a composition and the flute with the horn form such a lovely duet. The delicate harp accompaniment makes it perfect!. Absolute top music!

As to the flute, the legatos or slurs have sometimes small transition gaps or passing sounds. I know this is difficult and many topics concerning this problem have shown up here on the forum. (Flute and oboe suffer most from that disease). But that said, your Song of the Forest is sooo beautiful.

As to the cost of music, I spoke a word on the topic by David. I do agree with you and Dave. The situation for us, classical composers is even more difficult, since all the (financial) attention goes to commercial music and sometimes to  individuals with no talent at all. But on the other side, there aren't that many examples in history of composers who could live from their written works. They were in most cases teachers (and not only in music - think of Bach, or even lackeys - think of Haydn). Music is probably the least estimated of all arts. Many writers, sculptors, painters, cineasts... earn tons of money with their art. Composition is only rewarding in the commercial area such as pop hits and film scoring. You don't want to know how many times I was asked to play at this or that occasion... for free... Music is supposed to be a free art and nowadays with the social media distributing almost everything for free, it won't change the idea. And another issue is the selfprotecting inner circle of musicians who can live from their work. They don't allow anyone intruding in their small world. (E.g. in my country there are regularly composition contests. The winners are usually the ones that are/were the jury in the next or previous competition and vice versa. Any chance to win something? Nearly none...) But they keep your work and own the performing rights (participation condition). On the other hand, if you don't participate, you won't be noticed at all... What choice do we have? This is a sad world for (most) musicians. ðŸ¤”
