  • SITAR?

    how about a sitar horizon??!!
would be a intresting performance instrument. [H]

  • Thanks for your input. "Ethnic" instruments are on our radar, of course, but no decision is made up to now.

  • Hello Dietz,
is the bass flute on your radar too ?
I'm missing it a lot, and would need it much more than the bass trumpet…
BTW, is anyone using the bass trumpet sounds somewhere ?

  • Uh - this is not really my business ... maybe Herb can give an answer.

  • Yes It will be great!

Because the others library are not very realistic...

  • a sitar would be nice, but I *still* can't find any good libraries with traditional Japanese instruments (shakuhachi, Koto et al) Overall I'd love to see all the popular ethnic instruments in VSL, but I can see how that would be a very large challenge.

  • A sitar would be really nice!

  •  How about "Dimension Sitar" [Y][:P]

Wait a minute!  I just realized somebody dug this up form 2005!

  • ...It would still be quite nice, though. The only sitar I know of is the Garritan World Instruments one, about which I have not heard brilliant things.

I can't quite see 'ethnic' instruments fitting in with VSL's core market, which seems more classical, but I for one would love it. Whether enough others would to make it commercially viable is a different question.

I always hoped VSL would one day make virtual instruments of rare/period instruments, like the Serpent and the Ophecleide, which are quite hard to get hold of these days. Again, can't see that being a massive seller. Never mind. Sigh...

  • VSL continues to surprise me time after time but I think adding an ethnic instruments collection to the VSL palet would be an ambitious undertaking.  I mean how many Sitar, Kemenche, or Zhonghu virtuosos are there living in and around Vienna with nothing better to do.  Most likely, VSL would have to import the talent from the far reaches of the globe to their silent stage.

Not only that, but they would need experts to advise them on what nuance and subtlety of each ethnic instrument is important enough to sample.  One of my biggest complaints with Eastwest's Silk is how they kind of half-assed the Chinese string bowed instruments.  They sampled them like western string instruments when, in reality, the playing style is very different; a lot of portamento and note bending of various lengths.

Im not sure if there is enough demand in the market to justify the cost that would have to be endured in order to produce such a product because, afterall, VSL expects nothing less than perfection[:D]

  • Since Vienna is a Symphonic library, I would expect more priority to be given to the current standard orchestral forces. So, more articulations and contemporary playing techniques please (à la IRCAM etc.)

  • I'm still waiting for the Blaster Beam! Tired of faking it, I want the real thing :D
