  • Strings out of tune after VE update (Sibelius)

    Hi

My piece starts with strings playing portamento for a few bars and was playing fine until I updated VE a few days ago. Since then all strings are out of tune. I have tried everything: deleting "portamento" text and writing "nat" to reset the patch, deleting the staffs after copying to new staffs, deleting and rewriting the bars without portamento, reloading the patches both on Sibelius and VE.... nothing works.

The only temporary solution I found is to manually tune every string section from my keyboard

    Any other suggestions?

    Stavrinski

    (SE 1 bundle, Sibelius 8.5)

  • Hello Stavrinski!

This is an unusual problem. I don't know how an update of the software could cause this. Please check the pitch fader in your Vienna Instruments and the pitch wheel of your connected MIDI devices. I would also check the score on pitch bend commands. In Sibelius they start with ~B.

What do you mean with that you manually tune every string section from your keyboard? What exactly did you do?

    Best regards,
    Andi

  • Chiming in,

I had a similar problem with the Bass Tuba a month ago (Cubase 9 VE pro). Using a Cubase back up of the project made it go away.

In another recent post I have reported a strange erratic behaviour on the matrix tuning, which changed upon articulation changes without me having applied any changes. Setting the tunng for all matrices manually made it go away.

    regards,

    Gerard

  • Thanks for the promt answer Andi

The pitch fader for some of the strings on Vienna instruments is not at 0 position (middle of the bar) upon loading the piece. After manually correcting them they play on tune (is that what you mean by "setting the tuning for all matrices manually made it go away" Gerard?)

It is obvious that Sibelius sends a midi message to VE, but I can't find any  ~B commands in my score (when selecting view hidden objects)

I used the keyboard's pitch wheel to tune the strings sections

It is strange and it can be coincidental that this problem occurred after updating the software, but the fact is that I haven't messed with VE instrument pitch settings, and the problem persisted even when I re-wrote the parts on new tracks. It is not a very serious problem since it can be manually corrected, it is though annoying having to do this every time...

  • Hello Stavrinski!

It's likely that the wrong settings come from the pitch wheel of your keyboard and not from the software update. I guess you have saved your playback configuration with the wrong pitch bend settings. Saving your Sibelius playback configuration with the corrected settings should solve your problem.

    Hi again Andi

Yes that solved the problem- many thanks ðŸ˜Š

One more question: how do I change the glissando range of an instrument?

An 8ve gliss (F4-F5) on violins only play back as a maj. 2nd- violas and cellos can play it though!

  • Hello Stavrinski!

The pitch bend range cannot be set higher than 200 cent (2 semitones) and our Special Editions don't include any glissando articulations. We recorded glissandi for our Solo Strings I and Orchestral Strings I Full (only Violins) instrument collections though.
