  • Dimension String: Using Stretch on Portamento

Well here goes another post that will likely go unanswered....

I'm trying to use the stretch function to make the portamentos take longer, so it sounds like a nice good and long slide. It's not working.

    Advice? Paul?

  • Hi Grodhisatva,

    Great opening!

My suggestion is to only stretch the transistion time of the portamentos (I'd say the first 20 ms), so that the target note (played with vibrato) is not affected.

Make sure to switch the Stretch Mode ON, and use Algorithm 1 for the strings. If you change your settings, click "Render" to render a new patch.

Let me know which step helped.

    Best,
    Paul

    Hey Paul!

Yes I had to try to get someone's attention 😉

I'm still not getting a result, i have it on algorithm 1 and my stretch time is modeled like your envelope and stretched to almost 3 seconds! (SCREEN SHOT LINK)

I have used this function to stretch other patches like the crescendo timing on brass "dyn" to great success, I don't know why this isn't working!

  • Hi,

Do you see that a new patch is rendered for the selected slot(s) when you apply the Stretching?

EDIT: Very important: Is the CELL containing those slots enabled (dark blue instead of light blue)? Otherwise the RENDER button won't even be activated....

    Paul

  • Hey Paul

Yes the cell is enabled haha, but yes always safe to check.

"Do you see that a new patch is rendered for the selected slot(s) when you apply the Stretching?"

Not sure I understand-- are you saying that the patch name should change otherwise the stretch was not rendered successfully? I've never noticed this when stretching other patches

  • Hi,

This is how stretching works with VI PRO:

    1) You decide which parts of the sample you want to strectch, with a certain mode.
2)The stretching is applied to the selected slot above.
    3) As soon as you click "RENDER", a new patch with the stretching information is rendered, in the "Time Stretch Cache Folder" assigned in your Directory Manager. This takes a little time with the thousands of samples contained in a performance legato patch, and you can see the progress bar below the VI PRO logo working for at least half a minute.

Do you want to send me a short screenvideo of your steps? support@vsl.co.at

  • Hi Paul,

I take the chance to ask: any chance for a feature to stretch every slot of a certain patch with a single click? I know that feature would be helpful for  the Dimension Series only, and that sometimes to make different curves for every slot could be very interesting; but still, I would need that badly quite often, to save some time :)

  • Hello Fabio,

You can save those new presets you created, this way you always have them accessible without additional calculations (the patches have been rendered before).

    Paul

  • Hi Paul,

I've succesfully used this feature before I believe I am familiar with how it works, though I would gladly welcome a video.

If you can specifically send me a video of you or someone else stretching the portamento patch for Violins in Dimensions Strings so that it is a very long slow slide, I would greatly appreciate that.

How should I title my email so that we can maintain this conversation chain, as I'm sure you get hundreds of email per day?

  • Hi,

You can always contact support@vsl.co.at with specific questions, you can also include a link to a video that shows where you are stuck.

What would you like to see in the video / What Is not clear in the stretching process?

Sorry for any delays in advance, Vienna is buzzing with the Synchron Strings I Preparation.

    Best,
    Paul

  • Paul--

I sent an email with your name in the Subject.

That's great that you guys are excited for this new product release-- I've already purchased thousands worth from VSL because I know you make good products and have good customer service, so I have no doubt you or someone from your team will assist me, a loyal paying customer, quickly.

As I said in the email, and as I said elsewhere here:

I'm trying to stretch the portamento time between notes, so that the slide is nice and long.

If you can demonstrate that in a video, I would appreciate it.
