    Hello Dietz,

I have 4 Questions - just for my understanding:

    1. I read that the Main-Mic for Syncron Strings is really a MONO.Mic? A Mono-Mic made sense for Percussions, but for a large Section ... why did you use a Mono Mic? I expected a Main Stereo-Mic to catch the whole Ensemble Close.

    2. This time I bought the FULL-Version of Synchron Strings (with the Sy-Percussion I -Bundle it was only the Std.-Version). Regarding AURO 3D ... with Tools like the "Spatial Audio Designer" it might be a great experience to hear the sound in 3D-Headphone Surround! But without a MIR Version which allows mixing AURO 3D the whole thing does not really make much sense.
The Question: Is it technically possible at all to create an AURO Version of MIR (AFTERWARDS with what you technically already have) or do you have to go back into f. ex. Grosser Saal (Vienna) and record the positions new?

    3. With the Synchron Strings I expected that would you "break the rules" and would bring "Divisi Sections".I'm glad that you have decided to go the less cost-intese way by recording whole sections since I have all the other VSL-Product and Divisi is no Problem. But just for interest ... why did you decide so? Was it only the cost-aspect (and probably the production-time?) or does the recording of a whole Ensemble bring huge different results?

    4. And last but not least the biggest question of all questions ... Why does no one at VSL like the famous Violin-Horror Effects?? ;) The Percussions include Effects; the Strings don't.

    Thanks and Greetings

    Lars

  • Hi Lars,

I'll chime in for Dietz here, hope you don't mind.

    1) That's how Strings are recorded at Synchron Stage (and other scoring stages).

    2) We're watching the development of immersive sound formats closely. Let's see in which way MIR PRO can contribute here.

    3) It always depends on what you are after. A whole section always brings the sound you expect (and most people need in their every day work). Remember that this is Synchron Strings I...

    4) We hear you!

    Best,
    Paul

  • Hi :)

    Q. I read that the Main-Mic for Syncron Strings is really a MONO.Mic?

    A. That's how Strings are recorded at Synchron Stage (and other scoring stages).

Can I get some clarification on this, just to satisy my curiousity? What is meant by "main mic"? There isn't one mic, there are multiple mics. So, err.... confoosed :/

  • I think this was simply a misunderstanding of the technically description given in the announcement. Actually, the "main microphone" used is a spaced setup of three mono mics, a.k.a. Decca tree. There's no actual use for the center channel on its own.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi.

I´m still a bit confused, not by the main mics, but by the mono close mic. How can you get close to all the 14 1st violin players with one microphone? Is it a mono downmix of the typical one mic per stand-setup? Aren´t those usually fanned out a bit? Or is it a spot mic of the section leader? Or something else?

    Best,

This might be typical in a live sound enforcement scenario, but not so much in case of a scoring stage recording. Here, you will see section mics rather than individual microphones on each stand.

  • I don´t think one mic per stand is very unusual for soundstage recordings... I have had music recorded with just stereo front and back of the section, one per stand, and even one dpa per instrument, in addidion to the section mics... (very useful for pizzicati;)

Anyway this is no critcism, (I have already bought the thing), I´m just curious  And my question is still unanswered: How do you use the mono close mic? Is it a single mic picking up mainly the section leader, or a mono mixdown of several spotmics?

  • Hi Gaute,

    Here we go:

    1. Close mic mono: Is a mono mic which records the section leader

    2. Front mic L/R: Is a stereo pair in front of the whole section

    3. Rear mic L/R: Is a stereo pair in the middle of the sections recording the rear desks

    4. Main Room L/R: Is L+R of the so called DECCA tree. This is the main room stereo pair

    5. Main Room C: Is the center mic of the DECCA tree. If you use this mic with main room L/R you have the whole DECCA tree stereo system

    6. Main Surround: are the surround mics

    7. High Stereo (3D): is the stereo pair for AURO3D front

    8. High Surround: is the stereo pair for AURO3D surround

Hope that makes it a little bit easier.

    All the best

    Bernd
