  • VEP6 Crashing

I posted recently regarding crashes in VEP6 and Cubase 9 which was due to a corrupeted Cubase project but it seems I am having trouble again.

The problem now is, no matter which order I start the applications, VEP will crash after Cubase has loaded the project.

Also, Cubase freezes until VEP is closed, and once closed (vep) I am able to work in Cubase as normal.

This does not seem to be related to Cubase however it may be related to my plugings, i.e. UAD so is anyone else seeing this issue?

  • Hello emotive,

One way to find out more is to remove the plug-ins that may be causing the crashes and see if that helps.

Always make sure that you are using the latest versions of all plug-ins.

If that does not help, send the crash-report to support@vsl.co.at, maybe we can see the reason for the crash.

Any ovservation WHEN the crashes started (you probably created the song without any troubles) may  help to solve this (what changed, which plug-ins were added, which updates were made).

    Best,

  • Hi Paul,

I have sent my crash dump to the email address specified and have received the email auto reply but as of yet no personal reply.

I have updated to the latest Creators update, and VEP6 is again not responding.

Crashes were occuring when trying to save presets in the plugin (sampletank 3.7) but VEP not responding is becoming a regular occurance unfortunately, even after I remove preferences, create new project file(s) in both the host (cubase) and VEP softwares.

  • It was running for a while after I removed preferences but of course the plugin preset crash has not gone, which I believe would require an update from someone, i.e. the plugin or host developer (this is not specific to Cubase).

Now, since I changed the name of the Instance, each time I load Cubase it tries to load another instance, thus I get Not Responding yet again.

When I save a Cubase project with no connection to VEP, and then try to connect, it crashes. It also crashes when there is no instance and Cubase loads data into VEP.

Is there any reason for the instability and inability to use various methods to access the Mixing Host software?

Decouple Instance, allowed me to fully load project data from Cubase but of course VEP is not responding. I am also getting black screens and complete system hangs with the only solution a cold shutdown.

One thing I would like to know, do VSL have access to Microsoft error reports or is the onus on the end user to provide?

I am rather suspicious because while I can get it to work, and keep it operating for fairly long periods of time I can also make it crash very easily and this would appear to warrant an update because people will literally be forced to upgrade their OS, which consequently brings improvements to Cubase at least, e.g. editing the tempo map in real time is more stable.

  • To add to this post,

When there are black screens, this happens when a .cpr attempts to load a new instance, while an instance is currently loaded in VEP.

It could be a memory issue, however the "footplate" in VEP changes to multicoloured lines and the computer seems to restart in the background, and when the OS loaded objects on the display are at 125%.

  • Another problem,

When I load VEP (and a cubase project) where there are UAD plugins present but unavailable due to the hardware missing, when I close down the project(s) while Cubase closes without issue, VEP6 will hang, e.g. if I turn on the hardware before closing the .VEP project file but while vep does not crash, when re-opening the project there is no audio, i.e. after I have re-opened the Cubase file.

It may well be indicative of how Microsoft wants things to work, and frankly I agree with how it's operating but I can also see that these 3 applications (and hardware) are not operating in a stable manner and I think there should a resolution since it means I must shut down all the applications and start again.

Sometimes, as mentioned earlier I get a black or "blank" screen for about 30 seconds when a VEP project is loading but no crash however I cannot access the machine, and there is no mouse or keyboard control.

If I then go to the VEP plug-in in Cubase I get a hang for both VEP6 and Cubase and I must close both applications via Task Manager.
