But if I want to use the MIR Pro plugin in the same way, the output matrix doesn't even provide any surround channels to choose. Needless to say that the output signal of the plugin isn't 5.1 either.

I'm not quite sure that I understand the issue. Would you mind to provide a few more details (OS, software versions etc., as well as the intended routing concept), and ideally some screenshots too, just to make sure that we talk about the same things ...?
... apart from that I can assure you that MIR Pro will work in surround beautifully as soon as we can overcome the hurdles you seem to encounter. 😊

Basic setup: VEP as a rack instrument in Cubase pro; MIR Pro as a plugin.
The channel in Cubase is the output of a normal (stereo) VEP instance, which I have routed to a 5.1 bus. Now obviously the MIR plugin (directly in the DAW) considers the channel still stereo and - unlike the Cubase surroud panner - does not allow for 5.1 "placement" of the instrument, i.e. MIR output is only stereo. (If you have any suggestion what kind of screenshot might be helpful ... I can't think of any.)
As I don't want to waste ressources (apart from the question of converting the whole VEP project) I want to avoid sending all the information as 5.1 outputs from VEP surround when I actually need only stereo signals.
BTW: When I - after bbelius's - hint tried to alter something about the channel configuration there was an error (type mismatch) and I couldn't use MIR anymore. Now I couldn't simply get back to an older version but had to check all of MIR's secret folders to erase dozens of log-files you usually don't know about. Is there any easier way to get back to an older version (since much of the MIR information is obviously not saved with the DAW's project data), because this way it's rather annoying ...

I'm confused. Do you _want_ to have MIR working in surround, or do you want to _avoid_ to do this ...? But why the 5.1 channel then?
In any case - the MIR Pro VST-plug-in adheres to a very simpe rule: The channel format of the very first plug-in opened in an active Project determines the format of the ones instantiated afterwards.

I guess I do. As with VEP I think it is a less than optimum solution to have changes in the preferences affect everything - seemingly without the chance to go back to earlier stages. Or is there a way to save preferences? I don't think it's saved with either VEP/MIR's own projects. It definitely isn't with the DAW's projects, which is why one has to open the DAW, change, close and re-open ... or am I getting something totally wrong?
Many thanks for your efforts. I guess this will - as of now - be the solution I'll have to resort to. I've thought of that too, but I was hoping there was a way to do all the stereo to 5.1 thing without creating subgroups for every instrument I want to place.
As far as I can see, it's mainly that it's impossible to create a Cubase 5.1 channel and route a stereo plugin to the L+R channels - so MIR would treat the thing as an all 5.1 business. And it's also impossible to tell MIR to place the instrument and send the output wherever the track is routed to ...
Which means: either try to rebuild the VEPS thing as a 5.1 project or keep creating subgroups ...

Hi...i am a new user here. In my case i tried connecting the axe to the matrix directly and its still the same, the I/O mode is also in stereo. I've even tried playing back music and the kick and bass are totally missing when its panned center but returns only when I pan it left or right in the saffire mixer. Is there anything on the matrix to indicate that I'm in stereo mode?
