  • Advise for mixing with UA plugins/preamps

    VSL community:

    I recently switched audio interfaces to an Apollo, and have been expermenting with their pre amps.

    So, what sort of pre amps would be used for the main mic setup in a scoring session?  I feel like some of these UA vintage plugins have really cool-sounding coloring to them, but I really don't know how to weild them properly yet. I mean, would Neve 1076 pre amps be used?  Would that coloring be effective in making a realistic sound?

    For those familiar with Univeral Audio, I have my stereo outputs from Vienna Ensemble going through UA's virtual consol (which allows me to use the plugins on the outboard gear's processor, which won't suck CPU from my computer) and then routing that audio back into Logic.

    Would different pre amps be used for different sections of the orchestra?  When I've done things in the past with real orchestras, they had isolated some of the percussion, piano, organ, and harp in other rooms... and recorded the choir separately.  So, hypothetically, I could route each group of instruments (Winds, strings, etc) into their own channel of UA's consol, utilize their vintage plugin emulations, then shoot that mix bus back into Logic for final printing the audio.

    Yes? No? Dumb? Go back to school?
