  • Reflections in a Moonlit Night

    Hi all,

Here is an (old) composition - a septet for string quintet, flute and bassoon - fully reworked with only VSL instruments (solo strings and woodwinds). The acoustic environment is MIR Pro, Mozart Hall.

Reflections are here mirrored images of the night sky in water, but deep nightly thoughts as well. The style is somewhat eclectic.

The earlier version was a composition challenge with the fellow composers Fabio Biolcati (Italy) and Raymond Robyns (The Netherlands). They both created a sequel to my music in 2012, for the three of us the pre-VSL-period.

  • Very well done! The performance and the mix are terrific. Your composition itself was interesting and mostly held my attention. I would say the style was more than somewhat eclectic, in a very good way.

  • Thanks Paul for listening and commenting. I'll try to remake the earlier visualisation video and post it in due time.

  • Jos, you did a very good job at this re-rendering of the Moonlit Septet.

The music was already there in GPO days, but you took it a step forward in realism and performance.

Let me say that the bassoon seems to me to have more reverb in it than the other players. This surely gives a sense of live playing caught onstage, yet the bass reed has more ambience than the rest of the ensemble around him.

PS. I'm not sure to be able to render my Septet again shortly. I wish to do it sometimes, then things lead me somewhere afar…

  • Hi Fabio,

Your observation is quite sharp. Indeed, the bassoon (and the cello) had a wet ratio of 100 %, whereas the other instruments were around 35 %. I had noticed myself some days ago while freshening up the score. It was a little carelessness I didn't hear or see when rendering. But I'm glad you found it and pointed it out. I'll do a new recording in a few days.

    Thanks for listening,

    Jos
