  • First Exerpt for comparing Syn. Str. with the old Libraries

I will offer a comparsion between the "old" Libraries and the Synchron Strings as soon as possible.

With this starting thread I'm going to post the two pieces which I will use for the comparison.

The first piece is the famous arrangement for string orchestra of the E-Partita from Mangiagalli. It only contains staccatos, sforzatos, détaché and other short articulations. I tried to take full advantage of the whole dynamic range. I also prepared the down strokes always a bit louder than the upstrokes. I hope that I will get back a very natural performance with the Synchrons.
This is what the "old" string libraries* can do: E-Partita (Score below as attachment zipped-pdf)
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The second piece is the AIR on a G-String – a bit arranged by myself. As you can hear I manly have the legato articulation in use. I tried to use the whole dynamic-range with the X-velocity. Maybe sometimes a bit overdone but I am keen on the result with the Synchrons.
This is what the "old" string libraries* can do: Air on a G-String
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    *Used Libraries
For both pieces I used a mix between the Appassionatas, the Orchestra-, the Chamber- and the Solo- Strings. I believe this ended in a compatible “film-orchestra-string-sound” which can be compared later on with the one of the synchron strings.
    Effects
I used the EQ only for low cuts and high cuts (no sound design). For panning I only used the balance poti of Cubase (no stereo narrowing etc). As reverb: Only a bit of an Algo, a bit longer decay for the Air a bit shorter decay for the E-Partita but no extra-depth. Some small Mastering for getting an even better sound. That’s it.
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Even if we have a big part of the libraries I will wait for the new Synchron Player so that I will be able for getting out the most possible quality of the Synchron Strings

Have fun – and as probably you I am looking forward to the new library and the new player

    Best

I am happy to post a first exerpt.

Once more: this is what the "old" strings can do: E-Partita (same Excerpt than below)

It is a mix between Solo, Chamber, Orchestra and Appassionata- Strings. (For more info see first thread)

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And this is how the Synchron Strings sound: E-Partita (excerpt)

Room-Mix + Close Mix (-4dB) and only done with Medium-Dynamic samples.

Absolute no EQ, no Reverb, just a little compression.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Synchron Strings sound Example 2: E-Partita (excerpt)

Room-Mix only and only done with Medium-Dynamic samples.

Absolute no EQ, no Reverb, just a little compression.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Remark:

The Midifile is still not total optimized for the new library. The complete piece I will do with the new Player for Synchron Strings for getting the most out of the library. Let us wait for it.

  • Wow. Thank you so much. These are incredibly helpful to hear.

I don't own Synchron yet. So I also respect that my input is less informed and I may seem like someone who rants but doesn't buy. I do own several VSL libraries and I typically have what you call 'sample-buying-addiction'. But I've become a conservative buyer who waits until everyone competes, to avoid re-buying. So all I have are the demos and my ears and my poor ability to put what I hear to words. In short... my opinion is worth half of what Beat's is probably worth here.

    E-Partita:

This is possibly the best demo I've heard of any string library. Paul's complete preset walkthrough and your demo both confirm my suspicions: I love the short articulations, the dynamic range of them, the balance of detail between gritty and lush... it's the right clay to work with. I mean, it's literally THE right clay. It's difinitive. There's nothing out there that can make that mock-up as convincing to me. That's true especially for the period of piece it is but likely in general. I'm amazed.

    AIR on a G-String

The legato is very off for me. That said, I offer this quote. "Remember: when people tell you something's wrong or doesn't work for them, they are almost always right. When they tell you exactly what they think is wrong and how to fix it, they are almost always wrong." - Neil Gaiman

Why I don't care about legato problems:

I won't (and possibly can't) truly say why. But I will point out that I once started quite a heated thread on VI-Control complaining about Spitfire's legato. They have a history of legato problems and their "fixes" are generally cheap hacks that sound like crap. So I'm what you call "a typical legato complainer". BUT, I also recognize that all these companies have decent and capable minds doing extraordinary work. I'm absolutely grateful for the tools I have and the people that develop them. I'm just never happy with legato. In the end I've found that the only way to have a perfect library is to own multiple libraries. The only way to get an amazing legato is to work with a live orchestra. Weird, I know.

Still, E-Partita proves that this is the library to beat right now. It's an incredible and one-of-a-kind mock-up.

If I'm understanding his post correctly, the Air is not done with Synchron. I assume he'll be posting that soon.

My posts above seemed not to be so clear. I edited them and I hope it is more clear now - sorry.

The "Air on a G-String" you can listen to above is not done with the Synchron Strings until now!

With the first thread I introduced the two pieces which I will use (also for me) to compare the old and the new type of Libraries. So the two pieces in the first thread are done with a mix between Solo-, Chamber-, Orchestra-, and Apassionata-Strings. It is what we can do with the "old Libraries".

Now we have the new strings but we still not do have legatos for all of them until now and we still not do have the player as well which will gives us the full power of the Synchron strings. So I only did a short Excerpt of the E-Partita for all of those who want to have more demos. But also here with this short excerpt: It shows not the full power of this Library. I am sure because I only used the samples out of the dynamic range "medium". So I believe that we should wait until the new player and all the legatos of the 2nd Violin, the Violas and the Basses are available. We need to have some more patience.

  • Hi Beat,

Thanks so much for doing the Partita version with the Synchron Strings. It really sounds great what you have done here.  I'll be keeping a watch out for any more demo's that are done on this site with this library.

Thanks again for posting that demo.

    best regards,

    Steve :-)

  • Congratulations Sir!
One of the best mockups I ever listened to.

Both versions sound great. I have to say I honestely prefer the "current strings version" overall. I think the different articulations make the difference. Also, it sounds even more dynamic to me! The voices sound more balanced. In the Synchron version cellos are a bit hidden. Then of course, the Synchron version shines in realism with the new wet samples.

Thank for that, All the Best,

  • Beat,

My mistake!! Thanks for clarifying. I also agree that patience is in order. :)
