  • Filter

Hi I'm New here and I can't find how I can use in pratice the filter of VI ( I have the VSL SE1 and SE1+ )
So I would like to ask how you use the filter! put here and I will read and be very glad!
I heard that some people use it in brass but I dont understand when to use, and for what objective....
Hope learn something with this post !

    Thanks, Happy 2018 !

  • Just experiment by taking some Brass patches on maximum velocity layer, Then hear the difference (the "sharpness" is taken away. (It is still forte, but has a more mf character)

    Hope this helps

    Hi Daniel,

I regularly use it with powerful brass, in conjunction with velocity Xfade. If you slightly slide up or down the filter in its higher part with horns or bones, you will increase/decrease the brassy character, as soon as you're on a quite high velocity. I use it for attacks and tails so as to have a more (supposed) "real" behaviour, with some inertia to the full brassy sound. And slightly decrease towards the end of the note. You can do it with the velocity Xfade too but you'll quickly loose gain so there's a sweet spot where you get something nice, playing with both parameters.

  • I use it also to make a solostring tone a little bit more living, by changing the filter a little (!) during a tone. This to avoid a static tone. (You can do this also with the oboe for example). In conjunction with this I use the equalizer to sharpen especially the violin and violoncello a little (above 2500 Khz). By sharpen the tone first a little I prevent the tone to become to dark and liveless.

Another benefit of this tool for me is, that with this tool the high velocities of especially the high tones of the violoncello are very usefull. They can sound a little sharp. I use for this:

    • Type LP12,
    • F1 on about 2 KHz and
    • F2 on about 16 Khz and
    • put the curve on 5.00 (just by setting the mouse on the diagram and drag it to the right).

And then I can put just enough sharpness in a tone with master filter cc24. And what you hear then, is a so beautiful cello, full of expression. There are a few very good cello's in the market, but with the violoncello of the solostrings of VSL I get definitly the best results, how good the others are.

In the beginning I didn't understand this tool, but now it is one of my favourite ones.

  • It's great to use the Filter fader for ending wind frases. Both woodwinds and brass. Instead of just fading with CC11 (Expression), cutting off a bit of top with the Filter can give a bit more natural feel to it.
