  • French horns played back wrong in Finale

    Hi Andi!

Working on my own HP Presets for VSL in Finale. It's not that difficult once you get the basic idea, but I have a feeling it's slightly buggy (from Finales' point of view?).

Sending you a short film of french horns playing. As you see (the line just above the Vienna window) nothing changes in terms of written dynamics in the score. and it starts soft and gentle. But suddenly it plays with extreme force. I can't figure out why... Vienna stays in the sustained sound... The expression fader actually goes down when the forced sound comes. Any thoughts?

  • And another question in the same area, I think.

Finale lets me add instrument techniques I want to use. I did that with strings, and directed them to the right patch via keyswitches and CC1. But FInale actually mixes them up quite alot. A section of legato (slurred) notes might be played by the legato patch, but also by the sustained patch... Since these are extremely common it would be nice to have them working properly.

  • Hello Jonas!

I really can't say what goes wrong in your two cases. I have seen in your video that the loud notes get played with a way higher velocity. I guess that these velocity values are in your score. Making custom Human Playback Preferences is not as trivial as it might seem. For our instrument collections I would rather use our keyswitch dump file than trying to make Human Playback Preferences.

    Best regards,

  • Hi again Andi!

Thanks for your reply. I've spent the day trying to master the HP in Finale. It's tricky, but learnign a few things how it works (and a few bugs) it actually works rather well now! Hurray for that!

    Two new questions for you:

    1) I'm thinking of creating (or maybe updating) some of the percussion "collections" (matrixes) from Vienna Special Edition for my use with finale. Is it at all possible to combine and create something similar to the Special Edition "drums", "cymbals & gongs" etc? They are rather good to use in Finale, since they combine many sounds in one matrix. Can I work on the ones that Vienna has created (change a few sounds, for example the suspended cybal to another from my newly bought full Vienna Percussion) or maybe create one big matrix from scratch and place Gran Cassa, toms, snare drums etc as I like it? Is this at all possible? I've tride to dig in the manual for Vienna Instruments Pro that I have, but can't really find a "way in" where to start.

Of course I want to use Vienna in all it's glory when working in my DAW, but Finale needs something else...

    2) I've read about percussion rolls having problems in crescendo/diminuendos from Finale. And this is where I am at the moment. Can you point me in the right direction here too?

Thanks for all your great input, Andi!

  • Hmm, if there is a way to mute specific keys i can put the patches on top of each other in slots. Just mute the keys i don't want and maybe transpose some of the patches to be on separate keys. Just a thought...

  • Hello Jonas!

There are no mixed percussion patches in the Percussion and Synchron Percussion Instrument Collections. Every instrument has its own patches. If you want to create a mixed instrument yourself, you could lay the patches above each other in different slots of one cell. Then with the Vienna Instruments Pro player you can limit the range of the patches and shift the pitches. It's not possible to mute single keys of patches.

I don't know what problems with crescendo/diminuendo rolls you write about. They are not easy to trigger correctly with notation software though.

    Best,
    Andi
