  • Windows VSTPlugins folder

    hi!
i just got a new windows pc (because my macbook died). i'm new to making music on windows (10) so i'm having troubles with my VSTPlugins folder. at first i installed the plugins (jazz drums, upright bass, sax) with the download manager / installer in the default folder, but ableton (live 10) couldn't find the plugins, (i scanned them), so i deinstalled them and then installed them again in a new folder i created and it worked, but i want the plugins to be installed in the default folder, so i deinstalled them again. unfortunately i couldn't find the default folders so i looked up the steinberg site (https://helpcenter.steinberg.de/hc/de/articles/115000177084-Speicherorte-von-VST-Plug-ins-unter-Windows-) and made these folders (shouldn't those already exist, or are they hidden?):

    C:\Program Files\Common Files\VST3
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\VST3

    C:\Program Files\Common Files\VSTPlugins
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\VSTPlugins

but when i choose one of those folders, the installer says "validation - folder is not writeable"

what can i do here? and how do i choose different folders for the VST3 / VST2 plugins and for 64bit and 32bit?

or how do i reset the installer to install the plugins in the default folder? (which then will hopefully work with live 10). i want all my VSTPlugins to be located in the default folders.
thanks for your answers! greets LP

  • The Common Files folder is write protected by default. Better to just create yoru VST folder directly under the Programs Files folders. Also good to name the VST folders differently (VST_32, VST_64,etc) to avoid confussion.

i installed the library in a new folder, how do i choose this folder, so that i can play the sounds? thanks!

  • Run the VSL Directory Mananger, and drag the new folder into it.
