  • Yamaha CFX Standard vs full for live

    Hi

    Ive bought the Yamaha CFX Standard for use for live gigs.
    Im playing mostly salsa, latinjazz, jazz, gospel and that kind of rhythmic music, and I cant deside if I should upgrade, and pay the €165 for having the full library?

    Im especially thinking about the second close microphone that looks nice.

    Any thoughts you want to share with me? :-)

  • Welcome theohjorth, 

    The additional close mics will definitely give you more choice for shaping your sound. 

    For live-playing, you want to stay with as little channels as possible for best performance, and usually without tons of added reverberated sound, so I think if you like what you hear with the Standard Library. the Full Library will make this instrument even more beautiful for you.

    I might buy the full version then.. Is it possible that there will come some presets more suitable for playing in fx rhytmic small-group settings out of the box?
    The presets there is now are nice, but all have too much reverb and are too wet for that. Of course I can sit and correct the things myself but its always nice with presets made by professionals so that I know that it will blend nice with the rest of the group :-)

     

    If not, do any of you out there have some nice presets for that you would like to share? :-)

    Jazzgroup could be one

    Latin could be another one - with a bit sharper shape to get thru with tumbaos

     

    I think that these kinds of presets would make the sample even more attractive for rhytmic musicians as myself :-)


  • Hi,

    Jazzgroup: I's start with the PLAYER preset, reduce the room mics and maybe add in one of the mid microphones. If you have the FULL Library, find the right balance between the Close 1 and 2 mics. 

    Latin: Start from the POP preset and adjust MIDI Sensitivity on the PLAY View to your wishes. You can deactivate or modify the EQs in the mic channels as well. Your taste defines how much ambience you'd like to add to the sound. 

    Just as a quick guide-line. We'll see what we can come up with.

  • Is it possible to get a more dry sound?

    Ive tried to turn the reverb down to -inf, and only use one of the Close mics, and even with that there is quite a lot of room..Im afraid that it will make the sound dissappear in a salsa setting with timbales, congas, bongos, guiro, horns, etc.. :-)

    If you turned off Reverb and only use the close mics, that's as dry as it gets. The piano was recorded at a Scoring Stage... 

    But if you want the sound to be more aggressive, I'd start with the POP preset, reduce the MIDI Sensitivity, turn off Reverb and room mics and see if you can tweak the EQs in a way that help you to cut through.

    Ive made this now, I think it sounds good for cutting thru and still have some body, do you have some suggestions for tweaking it further? :-)

    See what the Dynamic Range control does for you (maybe a value of 80?), and it could be that you benefit from a slightly collapsed stereo image with the Close mics (use the power pans). 

    Compression will also not hurt, of course!

  • Hi Paul, Loving the piano so far. Is there a way to make the hammers softer for different purposes? Tried the intimate but it still feels a bit hard for what I'm looking for in the song.

    The 2nd close mic in the full version is a little less hammery.  Increasing the dynamics to about 115, midi sensitivity to -15 to -120, cutting the pedal noise, giving it a touch of body and sympathetic res, then a little gain.  Lastly, reducing the stereo spectrum a little on that close mic. Then EQ maybe around 100/150. Sounds pretty intimate to me that way.

    For sure. That 1st close mic is right up on the strings, so this way gives it a little less “attack.”

    Mixed in to a track I think this intimate approach works, but alone the sound is pretty flat.

    Edit:  I messed with the 1st close mic... this is what I came up with (see attached photo)

    Honestly, I would really consider getting the full library.  Those surround and high mics are magic.
