  • More Instruction Needed for Matrices

I've been using Vienna Instruments Pro for a while, but have only scratched the surface of what can be done.

I just came across the Matrix function.  It seems that this is a very powerful function I want to learn more about.  I watched a video discussing it in the tutorial videos, however, I feel I need more instruction.  The video seemed to just fly over my head as to what Matrices are and how to use them in composition.

Any suggestions on additional instruction regard the Matrix function?

    Thanks!

  • I set up mine where my mod wheel controls velocity xfade, and the XY axis' of the matrix are controlled by keyswitches.

My up/down moves are controlled by black keys, then the white keys in the same region control the left/right movements.  I organize the patches in terms of how similar or dissimilar the articulations are.  For example, all of my short ones are in one row, legatos in another, harmonics plus trems in another, etc.

I'm a pianist, so that black key/white key set up is very natural for me to maneuver.

To switch to additional matricies, I also use key switches.

  • Those videos were made with the assumption that most users were already versed in the matrix/cell system.

You might find it useful to watch the legacy videos with the old GUI.  I don't know if you can find those here on the site but you should be able to find them on Youtube.

Maybe Paul can chime in and provide a link?

  • And... there's always the manual.

  • I guess my question is really more fundamental.  Since I've already explored Patches and have a pretty good idea how to use them in cells, what are Matrices and especially what are Chord Matrices?  The Chord Matrices sound great, but it's not clear to me what they are and how to best use them.   With regular Matrices pressing one note generally gives you one note sound.  But with Chord Matrices, one note gives you a whole chord.  But what is that chord?  How else are Chord Matrices different than regular Matrices?  Perhaps the legacy videos would be of help.  I've looked over the mauuals and have not found answers to these questions there.

Thanks for all of the responses!

  • This is the only video I've been able to locate that discusses the Chord Matrices.  Unfortunately, it is rather fuzzy on the screen making it virtually unusable and it could benefit from more fundamental instruction and explanations.  The combination of the fuzzy image and the lack of thorough explanation makes it less helpful than it could be regarding a feature in Vienna Instruments that certainly merits better support.  It would be helpful if VSL or someone else gave this feature a more clear updated tutorial.  Plus, better support in the manual would help too.

    Hi pacificm,

The VI PRO APP Sequencer is indeed quite a complex tool.

Videos in a much better resolution can be found right here.

A chord matrix is a matrix with chords that are alread programmed in the APP Sequencer, with different inversions and variations of chords, which switches between different possible "voicings" of a chord.

I'm afraid I don't know how to explain it better than in the videos - it definitely helps to play with those matrices and check out the system.

    Best,
    Paul

  • Hello Paul,

    Thanks for your reply.

I noticed in the Downloads section of the VSL site there are several Matrices downloads for Vienna Instrumentsj Pro - 2.  Is there a way of knowing if I already have them installed?  I originally just installed Vienna Instruments Pro some time ago.  Are these just additional Matrices?

    Please advise.

    Thanks!

    James

  • Hi James,

Those matrices are included as soon as you install Vienna Instruments PRO. No need to install extra files. It's the VI PRO Presets you are looking for in your preset browser in VI PRO, those contain all sequencer matrices.

  • Hello Paul,

I use Vienna Instruments Pro (VIP) inside Vienna Ensemble Pro 6 (VEP6).  I'm aware of what version update of VEP6 I'm using becasue it's esy to check the version update number and I get the auto update reminders.

What I'm not clear on is the VIP version updates.  How do users know/check which version of VIP they are currently using?  How do users know if there is an update available?  How do users perform an update?

I installed my VIP quite some time ago and I'd like to make sure I'm using the latest version update of VIP along with the appropriate matrices/presets.

    Please advise.

    Thanks.

  • Hello Paul,

Thanks for letting me where to locate the software.

But, it still is unclear if, when, and how often I should be reinstalling the VIP software.

VEP6 is so helpful because of its easy to access update version information and auto update reminders.

I take it that when one updates VEP6, VIP is not automatically updated as well.  Is that correct?

    Thanks.

    James

  • That's correct.

Just download and run the latest VIP installer. No need to uninstall first.
