  • SE Vol. 2 GUITARS & KEYBOARDS standalone?

    Hi!

    1) Can you buy SE Vol. 2 GUITARS & KEYBOARDS Vienna Instruments Collection (https://www.vsl.co.at/de/Special_Edition_Vol2/SE_Vol2_Percussion) without owning SE Vol. 2 or is it required? I own Special Edition Vol. 1 and Special Edition Vol. 2 Plus. Having the harpsichord AND the organ would be great but the low price of 50€ for both + two guitars sounds like you need SE Vol. 2.

Moreover, the harpsichord alone is 55€ (https://www.vsl.co.at/de/Special_Keyboards/Harpsichord).

In short, can you only buy SE Vol. 2 GUITARS & KEYBOARDS and just that or only if you own SE Vol. 2 (strings etc.)?

    2) I have another question on strings in general. My Special Edition Vol. 1 & Plus contains many articulations. Why would you buy Vol. 2, 3 or 4? New instruments are nice (or articulations) but I don't understand the different setups (strings with 6 musicians, strings with 14 musicians etc.)? Why do you need that? You can compose a piece of work, instrument per instrument...and have 6 violins for example. Why do you need to buy a new library with a patch for 6 violins? Because of doubling and 6 real violins recorded at the same time sound better than one violin you use on different tracks in your project?

  • I don't understand your first question.  If you just want to the guitars and the harpsichord then just buy the download products for those instruments especially now that they have the buy 3 for the price of 2 special.

As for your second question... Don't take this the wrong way but are you new to orchestral sample libraries?

The size of the string ensemble affects the color and texture of the sound therefore recorded samples of different ensemble sizes are essential in trying to approximate a real ensemble of that size.

"Why do you need to buy a new library with a patch for 6 violins? Because of doubling and 6 real violins recorded at the same time sound better than one violin you use on different tracks in your project?"

I think you may have just answered your own question.

If you try to record a single violin six or more times in order to simulate a chamber ensemble it won't work because of phasing.  However you might get away with three players if you transpose the samples of two.

  • 1) Thank you for your reply! Already bought Vol 2. Guitars & keyboards. I think I mixed it up with Vol. 1 and Vol. 1 Plus...the "Plus" library requires Vol 1. ... so I thought you need other parts of Vol. 2 to get the guitars and keyboards. Moreover, I don't understand the prize. Harpsichord, organ + 2 guitars = 50€ but the harpsichord alone is 55€. Why?

Harpsichord, organ and two guitars: 50€

    Harpsichord alone: 55€

    2) Am I new? Yes and no. I am used to virtual instruments but don't have experience with classical orchestration. My main project is metal with a violin, cello every now and then...and brass, flutes...the typical lineup with guitars, drums, bass and keyboards. Classical instruments are used for the melodies or atmsphere...so no orchestration where chamber strings consisting of 10 violins would make sense. :)
There are many strings VSTs out there and I just chose VSL because of the natural sound (in contrast to others with reverb already prerecorded).

  • Hi,

    1) Special Edition instruments are always optimized versions of the bigger single instruments and instruments collections.

    2) If you are looking for solo instruments, you will find many options here :-)

    Best,

    @ LeanderAT

Yeah basically the SE collections are sampled at whole tone rather than half tone like the bigger collections which is like the difference between a 6 megapixel image (S.E.) and a 12 megapixel; more information means more detail in the sample.  Also, you get more velocity layers and variations with the bigger collections.

The S.E. collections are watered down versions of the bigger libraries.

  • Thanks!

I think buying more does not make sense for my purpose. :) Volume 1 already has a violin ensemble with 14 musicians or 8 celli.

  • Another question: what is the difference between Fanfare Trumpets, Epic Horns and the brass section in Special Collection Vol. 1 & Plus? Can't you program everything with my libraries too?
